Attempt at Vue 3 migration

Submitted PR #771 to reduce vulnerabilities via npm overrides (37 → 32).

The remaining 32 vulnerabilities are all rooted in the Vue 2 ecosystem (vue 2.x is EOL) — they cannot be resolved without a Vue 3 migration. The fixable transitive deps (minimatch, webpack-dev-server) are now overridden to patched versions.

Previously PR #762 also fixed some (qs, babel).

Vue 3 Migration Analysis

Reviewed the current dependencies and existing PRs. Here's what we're working with.

Existing Work

• Dependabot PR build(deps-dev): bump vue from 2.7.14 to 3.5.13 #652: Bumps vue 2.7.14 → 3.5.13 (but CI is failing — this only bumps the core, not the ecosystem)
• Dependabot PR build(deps): bump @fullcalendar/vue from 5.11.5 to 6.1.19 #697: Bumps @fullcalendar/vue 5 → 6 (Vue 3 native FullCalendar)

The Key Decision: What Replaces bootstrap-vue?

This is the most impactful choice. bootstrap-vue v2 is Vue 2 only and the component library we use throughout the UI. Options:

1. bootstrap-vue-next — Community Vue 3 port of BootstrapVue, closest migration path, but not officially by the BootstrapVue team
2. Bootstrap 5 CSS only — Drop the Vue component library, use plain Bootstrap 5 CSS + raw HTML elements. Most work to migrate but cleanest result. Drops jQuery entirely.
3. shadcn-vue — As discussed in Migrate to shadcn components? #527, if you want to take ownership of components. Largest upfront work but aligns with your stated preference.

My recommendation: bootstrap-vue-next for the initial migration (least disruption, gets us to Vue 3 fast), with a follow-up issue to evaluate shadcn-vue migration separately. The security vulnerability problem is already resolved via PR #771 overrides — the Vue 3 migration can happen at the right pace.

Also Needs Attention

• vue-d3-sunburst: Your custom fork (ErikBjare/Vue.D3.sunburst) is Vue 2. It would need to be updated to Vue 3 as part of this migration.
• The codebase has BOTH @vue/cli-service (webpack) AND vite — the webpack stack is legacy and should be removed as part of this migration.

Suggested Approach

1. Decide on bootstrap-vue replacement (likely bootstrap-vue-next for quick path)
2. Create a migration branch, apply vue → 3.x + plugin-vue
3. Work through each component systematically
4. Run bootstrap-vue-next's migration guide for component API changes
5. Update the vue-d3-sunburst fork to Vue 3

Happy to start the actual migration once the bootstrap-vue replacement is decided.

Phase 1 PR submitted: #773

The build system is now on Vue 3 + bootstrap-vue-next. Build passes (2191 modules transformed, 26s).

Key migrations done:

• Vue 2.7 → 3.5, Router 3 → 4, Bootstrap 4 → 5
• Removed all webpack/@vue/cli deps (Vite only)
• Stubbed Vue 2-only packages (vue-awesome, vue-color, vue-datetime, vue-d3-sunburst)

Phase 2 will be individual component migration — replacing stubs with real Vue 3 packages and migrating <b-button> etc. to bootstrap-vue-next syntax.

The Vue 3 migration was completed and merged in #773 (merged 2026-03-23). The build system now uses Vue 3 + bootstrap-vue-next, and all webpack/@vue/cli deps were removed. Closing this tracking issue — follow-up Vue 3 migration work (stub replacements, component migration) can use fresh issues.
