EPIPHANIES: E-SCENT-IS-NOT-READING (perennial) — scent routes, it doesn't read

head/tail/summaries/breadcrumbs are the 1-byte Scent tier applied to prose: a
positional preview for routing, never a substitute for the read. Mistaking the
scent for comprehension is the student who skimmed the first + last chapter and
wrote the essay anyway. Dual duty: load-bearing caveats live in (or are flagged
out of) the scent zone, never buried (cf. Gotcha 14 placement). Ties together
the Reading-Depth-Ladder, Lie-Detector, Read-before-Write, and the codec Scent
tier into one bite. Operator's framing; the perennial keeper from this thread.

+`head`/`tail`, a compaction summary, a doc's intro+footer — these are the 1-byte **Scent** tier (codec stack, ρ≈0.937) applied to prose: a cheap positional preview that *triages* ("is this the right file / section / does it concern me?") for ~free. That is its whole job. **It is not reading.** The failure mode is substituting the scent for comprehension — the student who reads chapter 1 + the conclusion and writes the essay anyway: fluent, confident, wrong. (`grep`/`sed -n`/`head` are *locators*, not comprehension; the workspace's Reading-Depth-Ladder + Lie-Detector LD-1..5 exist precisely to catch this.)
