Logging Infrastructure Documentation
Overview
The NEXUS Logging Infrastructure provides comprehensive logging capabilities without external dependencies. It offers structured logging, log search, analysis, and export features while maintaining simplicity and performance. Implementation
File Location Main File: middleware/logging
Infrastructure
Simple.js Integration: Integrated into server.js as middleware Dependencies: Node.js built-in modules only (fs, path, crypto)Features
Structured Logging Log Levels: DEBUG, INFO, WARN, ERROR, FATAL Structured Format: JSON-based log entries Contextual Data: Request context and metadata Timestamps: ISO 8601 formatted timestamps
Log Management Log Rotation: Automatic log rotation based on size and time Log Retention: Configurable retention policies Log Compression: Optional log compression Log Cleanup: Automatic cleanup of old logs
Log Search & Analysis Full-text Search: Search across all log entries Filtering: Filter by level, time range, and context Log Statistics: Log volume and trend analysis Log Aggregation: Log aggregation and summarization
Export Capabilities Multiple Formats: JSON, CSV, plain text export Time Range Export: Export logs for specific time periods Filtered Export: Export filtered log subsets Real-time Export: Real-time log streamingAPI Endpoints

Common Issues
Log File Not Created Symptoms: Log file not appearing in expected location Solutions: Check directory permissions, file path, disk space// Test log file creation const test
Log
File
Creation = () => { try { const test
Path = path.join(path.dirname(logger.config.file
Path), 'test.log'); fs.write
File
Sync(test
Path, 'test'); fs.unlink
Sync(test
Path); console.log('Log file creation test passed'); } catch (error) { console.error('Log file creation test failed:', error); } };High Memory Usage Symptoms: Logging system using excessive memory Solutions: Reduce buffer size, increase flush frequency// Optimize memory usage const optimized
Logger = new Simple
Logger({ buffer
Size: 50, // Reduce from 100 flush
Interval: 2000 // Reduce from 5000 });Slow Search Performance Symptoms: Log search taking too long Solutions: Optimize index, limit search scope// Optimize search performance const optimize
Search = () => { // Limit index size for (const [key, entries] of search
Engine.search
Index) { if (entries.length > 500) { search
Engine.search
Index.set(key, entries.slice(-500)); } } };Debug Mode // Enable logging debugging process.env. LOG_DEBUG = true;// Debug logging operations const debug
Logging = (operation, data) => { if (process.env. LOG_DEBUG) { console.log(Logging ${operation}:, data); } };Best Practices
Log Message Design Use clear, concise log messages Include relevant context and metadata Use consistent log levels Avoid logging sensitive information
Performance Optimization Use appropriate buffer sizes Implement efficient rotation Monitor logging system performance Use async logging for high-volume scenarios
Security Considerations Sanitize log entries to prevent injection Avoid logging sensitive data (passwords, tokens) Implement log access controls Use secure log storage
Maintenance Regular log cleanup and rotation Monitor disk space usage Review log retention policies Backup important log data
Future Enhancements
Planned Features ELK Integration: Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana integration Log Streaming: Real-time log streaming to external systems Advanced Search: Full-text search with regex support Log Analytics: Advanced analytics and machine learning
Scalability Improvements Distributed Logging: Multi-node log aggregation Stream Processing: Real-time log stream processing Cloud Integration: Cloud-based log management Edge Computing: Edge-based log processing
