Unable to Install AZ CLI on Ubuntu 24.04

Describe the bug

I had AZ CLI installed on a Linux VM in Azure, when running a apt update && apt upgrade I got errors with AZ CLI

I have attempted a few things (see below) and regardless of what I do I get the following error:

Re-install

I assume this is caused by the issue on your OS as you are the first reporting this issue.

In general, sudo rm -rf /opt/az and reinstall should fix all installation issue, but you’ve already tried that.

There are some cases where *.dpkg-new are caused by symlinks. Is /opt/ a normal folder? Also, do you have enough disk space?

Yes, i have >15GB of disk and /opt seems to be a normal directory

Follow up: i then ran sudo apt-get install -f azure-cli and things now seem to work

No idea how -f can fix this:

-f, --fix-broken
Fix. Attempt to correct a system with broken dependencies in place. This option, when used with install/remove, can omit any packages to permit APT to deduce a likely solution. Any package(s) that are specified must completely correct the problem. This option is sometimes necessary when running APT for the first time; APT itself does not allow broken package dependencies to exist on a system. It is possible that a system's dependency structure can be so corrupt as to require manual intervention. Use of this option together with -m may produce an error in some situations.

For an update, this has now happened to three of my developers machines. They all exhibit the exact same behavior

sudo apt-get install -f azure-cli must have been a fluke, has not yet helped past the point above

the only way to get around this at all, for any machine, is

sudo apt remove azure-cli
sudo apt purge azure-cli

cd /var/cache/apt/archives
sudo ar x azure-cli_2.80.0-1~noble_amd64.deb

sudo su
mkdir -p ~/azcli-temp
tar -xf data.tar.zst -C ~/azcli-temp
sudo cp -r ~/azcli-temp/* /
