Yes this makes sense. I can make the change, but it might take me a little while.
Most of the code is written to use MAX_EXTERNAL_EFFECT_FOOTSWITCHES, so changing this to higher will work mostly, but the saving of the configuration and the web page will need some more changes to work properly.
