MT is sometimes unable to distinguish between node lists and edge lists. It often classifies the metadata nodefile as a link file, and selects the first two columns as source and target.

If the user does not realize this, they find that they are unable to customize the visualizations using any of the attributes in the files

Root cause: the Files UI treated most tabular files that were not explicitly identified as node files as link files. For metadata/node tables without “node” in the filename, MicrobeTrace could default to Link and map the first two columns as Source/Target, which prevented the remaining metadata columns from being available as node attributes.

Fix: updated tabular file-type inference to look at explicit saved formats, file extension hints, filename signals, and header signals. Files with real link evidence such as source/target or ID1/ID2 still default to Link, while metadata-style tables with ID-like/node-like headers now default to Node.

Added a focused Cypress regression using a metadata CSV without “node” in the filename. The test verifies the file auto-detects as Node, maps the ID field correctly, creates nodes, creates no links, and preserves metadata attributes like Lineage and Risk Factor.

Verification:
