Use Case Title
Additional values for Present and Absent Attendance Cateogories
Use Case Description
Propose adding the following Option Set Values:
PresentAttendanceCategory
"Present - Out of school, school-approved event" - The student is outside of school, participating in a non-instructional school-approved event and is not under the supervision of school personnel. School-approved visits to postsecondary campuses (college visits) is an example.
"Present - Exempt from instruction" - The student is outside of school due to exemption from instruction or examinations.
AbsentAttendanceCategory
"Absent - Parent/Guardian excuse provided" - The student is not in school and a parent/guardian has provided the documentation required by school, LEA, and/or state policies. This includes illnesses or health appointments that do not require documentation from the health provider.
"Absent - School-approved activity" - The student is out of school and participating in an activity that provides valid educational opportunity, such as vacations and travel, and is approved by the school, LEA, and/or state.
"Absent - No reason provided" - The student is not present and the reason for the absence was not provided.
Use Case Background
In the latest legislative session, MS has updated the school attendance laws to denote the types of attendance activities that can be counted as absences (excused and unexcused). In order to measure compliance with the law, additional attendance categories are necessary. MDE reviewed the list of local attendance codes being used by LEAs and are suggesting the additions above.
