I just reviewed some screenshots to check how FXAA looks, and what we currently have seems like a net negative. A few things are marginally improved, but it fails to fix most cases of jaggies. It messes up a lot of things and the deterioration looks bigger than the improvements. Features that legitimately are shaped like thin lines or points are destroyed by the algorithm. For example, in starry skyboxes it erases small stars; it makes a hash of the plat23 floor grate texture. Maybe I'll post some screenshots later to illustrate.
Now we have MSAA which actually works, so there is not so much motivation to improve FXAA.
NUKING r_fxaa would obsolete #533 and #1701.
