A PIP has negative associations for many, and thus not deployed often. However, there's always the change to work on improving performance without the threat of termination. For example to have employees pick up less of certain tasks to have others grow, or pick up different tasks to gain competency.
Also to have team members grow in an area that they some day want to be experts in.
