+## Root Cause Analysis
+
+### Error Source
+The error **"Content is too long. Please shorten it and try again."** originates from **DeepSeek's upstream API** (`POST /api/v0/chat/completion`), NOT from the proxy itself. The proxy had **zero context management** — no token counting, no truncation, no sliding window, no retry logic.
+
+### How It Manifests
+OpenCode (v1.14.41) sends conversations using `@ai-sdk/openai-compatible` SDK. When a session has:
+- Large system prompts (agent definitions, tool descriptions)
+- Multi-turn conversations with verbose tool results
+- Extensive `reasoning_content` from DeepSeek's "deep thinking" mode
+
+The total tokens exceed the model's `max_input_tokens` limit. DeepSeek's API returns the "Content is too long" error. The proxy had no mechanism to detect or handle this.
+
+### Observed Frequency
+In a single session (`2026-05-07T181358.log`), the error occurred **5 times** with the `deepseek-expert` model, across both `Sisyphus` and `Atlas` agents.
+
+### Models Affected
+All configured DeepSeek models, especially:
+- `deepseek-expert`, `deepseek-expert-reasoner` — lower max_input_tokens
+- `deepseek-vision` — additionally constrained by image token overhead
+

+### 4. Bugfixes in `_prune_single_pass`
+
+**The critical algorithm fix**: The original pruning algorithm removed ALL messages except the last user. This made strategies 2-4 (reasoning stripping, tool truncation, system truncation) unreachable — the messages containing the content to strip were removed entirely.
+
+**Fix**: Protect system message, last user message, and messages after the last user (current assistant response). System message is a last-resort removal. This ensures the most recent assistant response survives, making deeper content stripping strategies effective.
+
+### 5. Test Suite: `tests/test_context_manager.py`

+
+1. **Production deployment**: Ensure `token.json` has valid credentials with auto-refresh capability (password-based login) to benefit from token management.
+2. **Monitor**: Watch for "Content is too long" errors in proxy logs — they now only appear when pruning and retry both fail, indicating a genuinely oversized payload.
+3. **Tuning**: The `MIN_OUTPUT_RESERVE=1024` default and `DEFAULT_OUTPUT_RESERVE_RATIO=0.2` are conservative. For models with very large limits (1M+), the 0.2 ratio dominates. Adjust if needed.
