\f0\fs24 \cf0 Tom Hemphill Lab Journal\
\
Day 1: Overview of class, be sure to download Vim and not use TextEdit (whoops)\
Read paper for HW, do \'93Navigating Nigh Sky\'94 assignment for Monday\
Prepared environment and got GitHub accounts, made everything neat and tidy there\
Day 2: Got more acquainted with GitHub, learned how to collaborate\
Learned pull requests and and how to leave comments with those\
Discussed reading, talked about how to write good papers\
Collaborated through GitHub, did not get to conflicts and will have to do that on Friday\
Day 3: Attempted to learn conflicts\
Added lab
Day 4: Finished up assignments from Friday, worked on Python with Astroplan\
Was assigned Navigating assignment, read in list of galaxies\
Tried to edit Lab Journal within GitHub, we'll see how that goes\
Day 5: Worked more on Navigating assignment, apparently using Pandas tables is a really bad idea\
Spent most of day troubleshooting and getting same error over and over again\
It was incredibly frustrating\
Day 6: Finished up the Navigating assignment, tried to learn more about using Astropy tables\
Filled out Navigating worksheet, man with balloons walked by but one balloon tragically popped\
Accidentally uploaded my Navigating file directly to 480 repository instead of merging, because I am not a smart man\
Filled out Lab Journal, hopefully again didn't mess up\
Day 7: Learned about upcoming research project assignment, talked about reading papers\
Professor for 481 spoke to class, gave add codes for summer class. I signed up, will have to register\
Researched papers and looked through ARAA for exoplanet papers\
Day 8: Played with FITS files and different ways to view them\
Looked through several different ways to view FITS files, eventually settled on using the DS9\
Worked on assignment of looking at files, making them not flat and messing with colors\
Day 9: Went over some slides about observing and different filters that would be observed through\
Did flow chart of how a photon moves through the universe to an optical instrument\
Continued to work on FITS files and lab based on that\
Edited lab journal, I'm still unsure if I've been editing these correctly\
Day 10: Looked at some slides about taking in data, learned about CCDs and stuff\
Did an activity with emission tubes and spectral lines, played with spy glass looking things\
Looked into a lot of bright light, I think it might have affected my vision\
Day 11: Kinda didn't do much, finished up the lab and left early\
Day 12: Pandas and python stuff\
Learned some tricks of the trade with manipulating data and viewing FITS files\
Am very hungry\
Day 13: Were given Characterizing a CCD assignment, got into groups for project\
Read through packet a couple of times, waited to use the equipment for the lab\
Planned some for observing\
Day 14: Got to play with CCDs and figure out how they worked\
Took biases and different exposure time shots, spent 40 minuteds trying to get it to work\
Stood in dark for hour\
Day 15: Worked further on CCD project\
Messed with FITS files, was just confused 😐\
Discovered I could use emojis on this, gonna see if it works\
Day 16: Worked further on CCD project, used Jupyter Notebook\
Discussed Game of Thrones, last episode made everyone mad confirmed\
Day 17: Worked more on CCD assignment\
Reviewed some slides I think, I typed this entry late :/ \
Day 18: Looked at slides on FITS views, went over telescope centering\
Worked on gain notebook more, also messed around with Star Trek toys cuz they were there\
Day 19: Turned in CCD lab thang, reviewed slides\
Fixed journal\
I am so tired\
Day 20: Worked further on reducing lab\
Worked with more FITS files, tried to figure out how they worked
Day 21: Went over slides for scientific write up due Monday\
Reducing FITS was due today, is now due later\
Discussed Game of Thrones again\
