Final Controlled Validation Maturity Checkpoint

Purpose

This is the final controlled validation maturity checkpoint for the current IAMScope controlled-validation phase.

This is docs/checkpoint only. It does not run live AWS, call STS AssumeRole, run live_probe, create new pre-live plans, create or modify AWS resources, inspect raw AWS artifacts, copy raw artifacts, commit /tmp outputs, change executor logic, change validator logic, change report generator logic, change collector/reasoner/scorer/scenario-validation logic, change benchmark logic, add pass/fail labels, add composite scoring, claim production readiness, claim broad IAMScope correctness, or claim broad runtime exploitability.

Completed Controlled Validation Results

Controlled STS Run #1

  • Selected path: Env06 positive admin-reachability STS path.
  • Planned source: arn:aws:iam::<redacted-aws-account-id>:user/iamscope-test/env06-alice.
  • Planned target: arn:aws:iam::<redacted-aws-account-id>:role/iamscope-test/env06-admin.
  • Status: blocked before live execution.
  • Classification: environment_mismatch.
  • Reason: the live profile/source and checked target role did not match the sanitized Env06 path.
  • live_probe: not run.
  • sts:AssumeRole: not called.
  • Runtime validation result: none.

Run #1 remains useful because it demonstrates that the controlled validation workflow can stop before live execution when the current live environment does not match committed sanitized evidence.

Controlled STS Run #2

  • Selected candidate: live-profile-matched iamscope-admin denied STS path.
  • Source: arn:aws:iam::<redacted-aws-account-id>:user/iamscope-admin.
  • Target: arn:aws:iam::<redacted-aws-account-id>:role/arf-rt-DevRole.
  • Expected outcome: denied.
  • Observed outcome: denied/access_denied.
  • outcome_classification: corroborated.
  • credentials_obtained: false.
  • Downstream AWS actions: none.

Run #2 is the first controlled selected-path corroboration in this phase. Its evidence boundary remains one source principal, one target role, and one explicit test condition.

Supporting Machinery Completed

This phase also completed the supporting controlled-validation machinery and docs:

  • Controlled real-environment validation protocol.
  • Controlled STS validation report schema.
  • Controlled STS validation report schema validator.
  • Controlled STS validation report generator.
  • Controlled STS validation report bundle generator.
  • Bundle generation/review to /tmp using sanitized summaries.
  • Artifact hygiene boundaries for raw outputs, credentials, /tmp artifacts, raw AWS logs, Terraform state, pass/fail labels, and composite scores.

These components demonstrate that controlled validation reports and bundles can be generated from sanitized summaries and validated without committing raw runtime artifacts by default.

Relationship To Standalone STS Proofs

Standalone STS executor proofs include one denied proof and one assumed proof.

Those standalone proofs are useful executor/runtime corroboration:

  • They show the executor can represent a denied STS result.
  • They show the executor can represent an assumed STS result while preserving credential sanitization.

They are not the same as controlled finding/path validation. The standalone assumed proof does not replace a positive controlled selected finding/path validation result. Controlled STS Run #2 is the first controlled selected-path corroboration because it starts from a selected live-profile-matched path and records the bounded live result for that path.

What This Phase Proves

This phase proves only the following bounded claims:

  • Environment/profile mismatch can be detected before live execution.
  • One selected controlled STS denied prediction was corroborated by live AWS.
  • Controlled validation reports and bundles can be generated from sanitized summaries and validated.
  • Artifact safety and non-claim boundaries can be preserved while recording controlled validation evidence.

What Remains Unproven

This phase does not prove:

  • Positive controlled finding/path validation.
  • Downstream AWS authorization.
  • Production readiness.
  • Broad IAMScope correctness.
  • Arbitrary enterprise graph correctness.
  • Broad runtime exploitability.
  • Resource-policy Deny support.
  • Finding-level resource-policy reachability.
  • Real-world scalability.
  • Multi-account runtime stability.
  • Multi-day runtime stability.
  • All findings verified.

Artifact Safety Summary

Artifact safety state for this phase:

  • No raw /tmp outputs committed.
  • No raw AWS artifacts committed.
  • No credentials committed.
  • No generated bundles committed by default.
  • No composite score introduced.
  • No pass/fail labels introduced.
  • No downstream AWS actions performed during the controlled result recorded in Run #2.

Generated outputs and raw runtime details remain outside the repository unless a future slice explicitly performs a separate sanitized artifact-review step.

Maturity Verdict

controlled_validation_phase_complete_for_current_scope

The controlled-validation phase is complete for the current scope. The next risk is over-expansion, not lack of one more live probe.

Run #1 showed safe mismatch handling. Run #2 provided one matched denied controlled corroboration. Standalone executor proofs already cover one denied and one assumed executor path. The project now has enough controlled-validation evidence for this phase to move into packaging and presentation cleanup without expanding live validation by default.

Recommended next phase: release/readme/research packaging cleanup.

Do not recommend more live probes by default, broad validation, production testing, downstream action testing, CI gates, composite scoring, a new benchmark framework, or multiple phases at once.

The next phase should focus on explaining the current maturity honestly, linking the relevant checkpoints, and preventing these bounded results from being overread as production readiness or broad exploitability proof.
