Building on these analyses, how do institutional and market frictions contribute to disparities in firm growth? Could AI and automation play a role in alleviating these inefficiencies?

How might the interaction between delegation efficiency and firm size influence the long-term evolution of industry concentration in the U.S. versus India, given differing baseline inefficiencies? Does delegation efficiency optimize for/ correlate to creative destruction seen in countries like the US. The reading also states: "the few Indian firms with the potential to expand are substantially less efficient in doing so relative to the United States" would the advent of AI improve the likelihood of firms with poor delegation efficiencies ability to expand?

My question is whether or not the model controls for the difference in the tasks that firms undertake in India VS US. I’d assume that both countries specialize in different industries. But that even within the same industry, the US and India specialize in very different parts of the supply chain. I would think that most of the factories in India would be focused on more lower level production, whereas the American industry is more focused on assemblage. I would thus think that managerial expertise becomes much more important in the US, if only because the firms that are operating within it are more focused on these higher-order tasks. In other words, is it a fair comparison to assume that a plant in India is the same as that in the US? Could this be why a manager is only one-half as efficient in an Indian firm relative to another firm in the US, not because their delegation is less efficient, but that the work one is doing is inherently more “efficient” than the other?

Additionally, I had a question about the model of firm growth that includes firms incentives to expand and managerial delegation. Namely, how likely is it that firm owners would have the foresight to pre-emptively slow down their production due to their inability to delegate work. It seems rather counter-intuitive to me that one would pro-actively reduce their firm growth. Especially if you’re an entrepreneur, I would think that you’re more risk seeking and at least try to grow the firm first. It seems that the model assumes perfect information, which I am unsure these entrepreneurs, especially if we’re talking about the context now where technology is making it easier to communicate and delegate work.

Life cycle of plants in India and Mexico analyzes the potential effect of the life cycle on aggregate productivity through general equilibrium models. I hope to question the relationship between the second and third mechanisms in this paper. To reference, the second mechanism that the authors study is that lower life cycle growth reduces the competition posed by incumbents for young establishments. Because of this, lower life cycle growth can boost the flow of entrants, increase variety, and reduce average establishment size. The third mechanism is that a larger flow of entrants may bring in marginal entrants who are less productive than inframarginal entrants. How do we grapple with the contradictions that come with having a larger flow of entrants, which reduce the incumbent-posed innovation stifling but increase entrant-posed innovation stifling?

"Lack of Selection and Limits to Delegation: Firm Dynamics in Developing Countries" talks about lack of managerial delegation in India contributing to a slow growth rate of firms. In this paper they show that since there is a lack of trust in legal institutions leading people not to hire managers but instead only hire within the family. One phenomenon that isn't discussed as much is how "family businesses" affect growth dynamics. Even in the US where there is delegation laws, many people find employment through family or friends. From a meritocratic standpoint this could be a problem, since it means we aren't necessarily favoring the most qualified candidate for a position. It could also be possible that favorable social relations between employees can make a company easier to run, saving some invisible costs, hence why nepotism continues as a practice. What is the effect that nepotism has on economic growth?

Although they control for the industry the plants operate in, manufacturing plants can have very different "jobs" even within the same industry. For example, in the manufacturing of an iPhone, plants in China typically manufacture components such as batteries and display panels, whereas assembly processes occur in the US / Taiwan. Given the diverse nature of manufacturing jobs, how might the growth dynamics of plants differ between those engaged in the production of low-level components versus those focused on assembly and architecture / designed based tasks within the same industry? As the more efficent manufacturing observed in the US tends to focus on the former, could the transition from component based manufacturing to higher value adds help bridge the gap between India / Mexico and the US?
