Currently, there are two ways to "save" photos in a "personal album". Maybe I've got this wrong, but don't both do pretty much the same thing? There's the "Starred smart album", which can only be used by users with editing permissions (not sure if that's a bug or intended), and there's the favourites feature, which anyone can use, but it's only saved per device/browser.

Would it be possible to combine the two features or extend one of them so that users (without editing permissions) can star/favourite photos they like, which are then stored in their account?

You got it right. The star system was created before Lychee had multi user support, and I agree, there is a hole between favourite client side and starred.

There are two ways to solve this.

1. Extend the star functionality to per user (meaning current stars will be shifted to the owner of the picture)
2. Add support for a new favorite systeme, how to name it is a different problem.

Or...
What about a rating system 0-5 stars, votes are registered per user. Adding possible smart albums for the different ratings, and thus solving this favourite issue. 🙂

I think having a proper rating system would be a better approach too but i will probably look into it after the things I have on my plate.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood the "Starred Albums" feature. I thought this album was user-specific, but it's actually a "global" smart album where all starred photos are added, right?

Basically, I was thinking of a favourites system, but one where favourites are stored in the database rather than in the browser for logged-in users (so that they can log in on another device and still have access to their favourites).

But regardless, the rating system still sounds like a pretty nice to have feature :)

Yes.

That being said making the smart album user specific is something pretty easy to implement.
