Hi — I’m using MIMIC-IV and MIMIC-IV-Note to study medication communication at hospital discharge, and I’m trying to understand the provenance of a few fields more precisely.
The discharge summaries often contain both a Discharge Medications section and a Discharge Instructions section. For the BIDMC period covered by MIMIC-IV (2008–2019), do you know how these sections related to the material patients actually received?
In particular:
- Was the full discharge summary given to the patient, or were the instructions placed into a separate after-visit/discharge document?
- Did patients routinely receive a reconciled medication list in addition to the narrative instructions? If so, is that list represented anywhere in MIMIC-IV or MIMIC-IV-Note?
- Do the pharmacy or prescriptions tables include outpatient discharge prescriptions or take-home fills, or are they limited to medications ordered/dispensed for the hospitalization?
- Was bedside dispensing available during this period, and was it routine or optional?
I realize the last question may be outside the dataset documentation. Even an approximate answer, a pointer to an old workflow document, or the name of the right BIDMC contact would be very helpful.
Thanks!
