Launglon Township residents flee junta warship shelling
A junta warship patrolling the waters off Launglon Township in Tanintharyi Region has been shelling nearby villages, causing locals to flee.
Since 15 August 2024, the warship has been patrolling off the coast from the junta’s Theapon Taung military base and further west off the coast of Thabawtseik Village. It has been firing into the villages of Thabawtseik, Pyingyi, and Kayingyi almost daily, according to a Launglon Township resident.

He said to KIC: “The warship fire shells almost every day, seemingly targeting areas where resistance forces might be hiding. On some days, it has launched artillery barrages more than ten times. Many residents of coastal villages have already evacuated to other areas.”

The shelling has forced more than 3,000 residents from the villages of Thabawtseik, Pyingyi, and Kayingyi to flee to other villages and areas around Launglon Town. Local resistance members have reported that the junta ship’s shelling has damaged at least four houses in Pyingyi Village and injured two women.

Junta bases in Launglon Township include Infantry Battalion (IB) 104, Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) bases 406 and 407 which all come under No. 18 Military Operations Command (MOC 18). They are currently reinforcing the bases in preparation for intensified military operations, according to Ko Shadow, a press officer for a people’s defence force (PDF) unit in Launglon Township.

He said: “The junta is reinforcing its positions in Launglon. Although its troops haven’t yet started military operations, they are making serious preparations.”

According to monthly reports from FE-5 Tanintharyi, a research organisation based in Tanintharyi Region, in July 2024 there were over 60,000 displaced people in the area of Launglon Township.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
Fighting and shoot to kill orders by the junta have trapped about 200 villagers in Kinmunchon Village in Tantabin Township, Bago Region (East), since the beginning of August 2024.
From 5 to 9 August, fierce fighting between the junta and resistance forces along with heavy artillery fire in the Zayatgyi area of Tantabin Township, where Kinmunchon Village is located, caused over 2,000 residents to flee to safer areas. The villages they fled from included: Kinmunchon, Doetan, PuKanKwe, NatYwar, HnitTantKu, and ThuHtayKone.

During the fighting in the Zayatgyi area the junta closed the Zayatgyi to Kinmunchon road and commanded the soldiers there to shoot and kill anyone they see who is not a junta soldier, including civilians.

Because the junta soldiers on the road were firing at anyone using the road, 200 villagers who were trying to flee Kinmunchon Village had to return to their homes. They are currently trapped in the village and unable to leave.

A resident said to the Karen Information Center (KIC): “Groups that returned to the village to gather supplies are now trapped. The military has set up checkpoints and imposed martial law with shoot-on-sight orders, making it impossible for them to leave. Major clashes are taking place around Kinmunchon and ShanSu villages, preventing any travel. Attempts to bring back [the people trapped in the village] are futile. While Zayatgyi town remains relatively calm, over 2,000 villagers from villages in the Zayatgyi area are fleeing.”

Since the beginning of August, residents from Doetan Village and nearby villages, also in the Zayatgyi area of Tantabin Township, had been sheltering from the fighting in nearby monasteries. On 9 August, heavy junta artillery fire killed three civilians people in the Zayatgyi area, according to local media reports. This prompted many people to flee from the monasteries, according to a local person.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 displaced people (IDPs) in and around the Zayatgyi area who urgently need food and basic supplies.

A local organisation helping displaced people in the area warned people displaced from their villages, especially those from Kinmunchon Village, not to try to return home because of the fighting in the area.

Previously, In February 2024, there was fierce fighting between resistance forces and the junta in Zayatgyi area. During that time, the junta launched numerous airstrikes in the area causing significant civilian casualties and damage to properties.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
Junta soldiers and police have joined forces to search for people who have been drafted for conscription into the army in downtown areas of Kyaikto Township in Mon State.
Junta soldiers have a list of the people who have been conscripted and since 7 August soldiers and police officers have stepped up their efforts to track down the people on the list in all of the six downtown wards of Kyaikto Town

A Kyaikto resident said to KIC: “Soldiers and police are moving through each ward, searching for people on their lists. These lists contain detailed personal information, including names, fathers’ names, and addresses of those set to be drafted. However, the number of people on the lists is so large that they can’t capture everyone. Even though they have addresses, they don’t know the exact locations of the houses where these individuals live. Some people have already fled after receiving advance notice.”

Following the junta’s announcement, in February 2024, that they were going to enforce the conscription law, the authorities have been conducting house-to-house searches for young people in the downtown wards of Kyaikto Town.

As a result, many youths temporarily fled their homes. Now that the situation has somewhat stabilised they have begun returning home and the soldiers have resumed searching for them.

Local media outlets reported at the end of May that the junta plans to abduct young men who are eligible for military service from their homes, whether or not they are on the conscription list, because the number of people who have been conscripted into the army from Mon State has not met the junta’s expectations.

It is unclear how many locals have been arrested in these most recent conscription drives in Kyaikto Township.

Most of the Mon State conscripts who could not avoid the draft have been sent to the Military Advanced Training Depot No. 4 (MATD-4) in Weakali Village, Thanbyuzayat Township, for military training. According to a report by the Burma Affairs and Conflict Study (BACS) about 400 men, were from Mon State were conscripted into the army in the first two conscription batches.

On 5 August the junta released photos approximately 150 newly conscripted men taking part in a ceremony at the beginning of their training at MATD – 4. They were the fourth batch of conscripts from Mon State.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."

CNF spokesperson, Salai Htet Ni, described the capture of the regional command headquarters, known as ‘The Red Sun,’ as a historic milestone.

He said: “The complete capture of a junta regional command headquarters marks a significant military milestone in the history of the ethnic armed resistance movement.”

“We wholeheartedly congratulate them on this success, as it not only stands as a major achievement but also greatly inspires us to continue pursuing our political goals”, he added.

The statement also said that The capture of the Regional Command headquarters will inspire other ethnic revolutionary organisations (EROs) in their fight against the junta and provide a great impetus to the push to overthrow them, according to the statement. Its signatories also pledged to fight authoritarianism and continue their struggle until the junta is overthrown.

The junta has now lost control of nearly all of Lashio Town, including the regional command headquarters and only a few remnants of its forces are still in the town.

Junta troops stationed at the central guard post and the military hospital inside the large Regional Command Headquarters compound, along with family members and injured personnel, gathered together, waved white flags and surrendered to the MNDAA, according to reports from the MNDAA/TNLA coalition.

This victory comes after more than a month’s heavy fighting, following the resumption of Operation 1027 in northern Shan State on 25 June.

During this second phase of Operation 1027 the ethnic resistance coalition captured key towns, including Nawnghkio (Naungcho) and Mongmit (Momeik) in northern Shan State, and Singu and Mogok towns in Mandalay Region. Combined forces of the TNLA and Mandalay People’s Defence Force (PDF) also captured nearly three dozen bases and outposts in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region.

There had been previous reports that the Northeast Regional Command headquarters had fallen on 25 July, but those reports proved to be premature.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
There are high levels of crime in the border town, which is home to a diverse population from various ethnic groups. For instance, a married couple who sold cars went missing and in recent days at least two delivery drivers have gone missing and not been heard from, according to locals.

A resident of Myawaddy said: “People frequently go missing, it isn’t reported as news… when thieves are caught stealing things we don’t know where they are taken.”

Talking of the missing people he said: “Delivery drivers have gone missing before. When delivery drivers deliver goods far away phone contact with them can be lost and they go missing for three or four days before going back home. The couple that sells cars has been missing for a long time, we still haven’t heard any news from them.”

A woman’s beaten body was also found at a dump near to Myawaddy Town, according to reports.

The people who have gone missing include people from Myawaddy and others who recently moved to the town.

Another resident said: “Even during the day, there have been cases of homes being robbed. Some thieves even enter homes and quietly eat the food that others have cooked. Overall, there is a significant lack of security. They [burglars] often carry knives when they burgle people’s homes, so if you resist, they might stab you.”

It has been difficult to independently verify any of these crimes and the authorities have made no statements about them.

Residents have also reported a significant increase in casinos, gambling activities, illegal money lending, and prostitution in Myawaddy Town.

Currently Myawaddy is under the control of the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF), which claims it is a neutral force, and the junta-aligned Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA). There are also still junta troops and a junta administration in the town.

A Karen BGF official told the Karen Information Center (KIC) media group that it has deployed 2,000 personnel throughout the town for security and to prevent any conflict.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
According to people assisting the displaced people (IDPs) in Myawaddy Town, junta troops launched an offensive from Myawaddy Town to recapture its four bases in Thingannyinaung Village Tract. They are the Thingannyinaung strategic base and the bases of Light Infantry Battalions (LIBs) 355, 356 and 357, which are currently occupied by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and allied people’s defense forces (PDFs).

A resident of Myawaddy Town who is assisting the IDPs said: “It’s been two days. Hundreds of military troops in uniforms have been advancing into the villages of Paw Law and Than Puyar from the Myawaddy trade zone and along the road behind Ywar Thit Village. They are junta military soldiers. Since their arrival, the villagers have been fleeing to Myawaddy. Including villagers from Ywar Thit, Nyi Nyaung, and Mekanei, who had not yet returned [to their homes]. Now there are about 2,000 IDPs staying in various places around Myawaddy Town. They fled in advance of the fighting starting.

During July 2024 junta troop reinforcements arrived in Myawaddy Town and stationed themselves at the IB 275 base, Thingannyinaung Police Station and trading zones in Myawaddy Town with assistance from the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF). These troops have actively conducting military operations in recent days, according to revolutionary forces in the area.

A villager from Ywar Thit Kone, currently sheltered in Myawaddy town, said: “Because of continuous airstrikes and bombings both YwarThit and Thingannyinaung villages have been set on fire and are now in ruins. We haven’t been able to return for about five months now. We are staying at the Yaepu Monastery and the rubber plantation refugee camp. Now there are reports that the junta military and the BGF are planning to resume attacks on the allied revolutionary forces. We still can’t return home.”

The IDPs in Myawaddy Township are receiving support from the Myawaddy Foundation and local business owners. Junta-aligned Karen armed groups, including the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), the Karen National Union/Karen National Liberation Army Peace Council (KNU/KNLA PC ( KPC), and the BGF, are also providing the IDPs with food and shelter.

Recently, in Myawaddy and the surrounding areas, the junta, and allied forces such as the BGF, the KPC and the DKBA have been collaborating on security operations such as manning checkpoints and carrying out security inspections.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
In Thai refugee camps on the border with Myanmar newly arrived refugees have been returning to Myanmar because they fear being questioned by the Thai authorities.
According to camp officials new arrivals to the camps have been questioned by the Thai authorities since the February 2021 coup.

New arrivals fear being questioned by the authorities, so many of them choose to avoid the questioning by leaving the camps and either returning to Myanmar or relocating to other areas of Thailand, according to an official from Mae La Refugee Camp, north of Mae Sot, in Thailand’s Tak Province.

In the first week of August 2024, the Thai authorities questioned newly arrived households in Mae La and Noh Poe refugee camps. The new arrivals were not permitted to stay in the camps and were instead sent back, according to reports.

Saw Kyaw Waw, the supervisor of Noh Poe Refugee Camp said: “When the authorities come to inspect, some people become frightened and leave. Others, who have no place to return to and cannot go back remain in the camp. The authorities tell them that they cannot stay and must return. Unfortunately, we are not authorised to make any exceptions or intervene in these situations.”

He said there is a need for an organisation to advocate for new arrivals at refugee camps who cannot return home because they face too many difficulties and are, as a result, suffering real hardships.

The new arrivals who the Thai authorities have been ordering to return are not listed on the official refugee register.

People started fleeing to Thailand from Karen State when fighting started in south east Myanmar in 1975. In 1984 the Thai government allowed refugee camps to be established on its border with Myanmar. Currently, there are nine refugee camps remaining on the border.

Of those camps, seven house mainly Karen refugees and are overseen by the Karen Refugee Committee (KRC). They are Mae La, Mae Ra Moe, Mae La Oon, Umpiem, Noh Poe, Ban Don Yang, and Tham Hin camps. The other two camps hold mainly Karenni refugees and are overseen by the Karenni Refugee Committee (KnRC).

The Border Consortium (TBC), a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from nine countries, provides humanitarian aid to the refugees in all of the nine camps. During the talks, Mr. Sullivan reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting the restoration of civilian rule in Myanmar, offering direct assistance to pro-democracy activists.

The resistance organisations collectively called on the U.S. to increase pressure on the coup junta and ensure accountability for those involved in human rights abuses against Myanmar people, according to the KNU statement.

The participants also discussed holding inclusive dialogues with all stakeholders, improving local governance, forging alliances among resistance forces, laying the groundwork for a federal democracy, and understanding U.S. foreign policy responses to Myanmar’s crisis.

Representing the KNU at the meeting were General Secretary Padoh Saw Tadoh Moo and spokesperson Padoh Saw Taw Nee.
This followed protests by Myanmar workers and negotiations to re-open the crossing between relevant parties, according to sources on the border.

The border gate was closed on 17 June 2024 by the authorities on both sides of the border.

Due to the disruptions to travel and the flow of goods caused by the closure, workers in Myanmar staged protests on 15 and 16 August to demand the border gate be reopened.

Subsequently, on 17 August, officials from both countries met to negotiate reopening the border gate. The gate was reopened the next day, 18 August. But, some restrictions remain in place and vehicles are not yet allowed to cross, according to a resident of Payathonzu Town.

He said: “No vehicles, big or small, are allowed to cross yet. Workers can only walk across. Even if you want to go and buy kitchen appliances from Thailand, you can only purchase small things. There’s a slight easing, but restrictions remain.”

Local Myanmar media reports said that during the discussions to open the border gate, the Myanmar border authorities said that the border gate needed to be opened to allow Myanmar students to travel to schools in Thailand, Myanmar workers to go to work in Thailand, and Thai goods to be imported to Myanmar.

The junta-aligned Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) controls Kyainseikgyi Township in Karen State which includes the town of Payathonzu and the Three Pagodas Pass Border crossing.

The border crossing was closed because the DKBA were in a dispute with the Thailand Border Guard Force over road maintenance issues that led to the border gate first being closed from the Myanmar side before also being closed from the Thai side.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."

During the visit, he pledged 1.3 million MMK in aid and provided essential items such as rice, oil, noodles, and eggs for more than 600 flood-affected people.

Later, the Hlaingbwe Township Administrator, U Win Than, convened a meeting with the ward administrators under his authority to discuss the distribution of food. There, he said that all the donated food, except for the noodles, belonged to him, according to someone who attended the meeting.

That person said: “U Win Than claimed that the rice and oil were not provided by the state government but were his own possessions, and that the distribution of these items was merely for show. He confiscated all the aid materials, stating that only the packets of dry noodles were actually supplied by the Chief Minister. Officials in charge of the shelter centers at Aung San Hall and Kamawtkachu Village also said that the promised funds had not actually arrived yet. There is no concrete evidence, but we all suspect that the cash may have been taken by U Win Than too. It is unclear who currently holds the funds, as there appears to be an effort to obscure this information.”

U Win Than’s claims were contradicted by footage released by the junta’s Ministry of Information that shows aid materials with labels clearly saying ‘donated by the Karen State Government.’

Residents of Hlaingbwe have also reported that the promised aid materials, including rice, have not been distributed to any flood victims.

Describing the situation, a resident of Hlaingbwe Township said: “After the state government authorities departed, the township administrator seized all the food aid intended for flood victims. Initially, there was a promise that the aid would be distributed after the Chief Minister and his team left, which raised public expectations. However, the administrator later claimed that the aid materials were his own and kept them all.”

Severe flooding triggered by torrential rains first hit Hlaingbwe Township on 25 July. So far, it has inundated over 140 households in Hlaingbwe Township. Temporary shelters to accommodate those displaced by the floods have been established at Aung San Hall in Kamawtkachu

Village, and at the Myoma Jamae Mosque.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
The two Myeik based journalists were arrested by the junta at their homes on 11 December 2023. Ko Aung San Oo was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison and Ko Myo Myint Oo received a life sentence.

Neither of the men have the right to appeal their excessive sentences.

Despite the journalists’ right to appeal and receive a fair trial, there has been no detailed explanation of the legal reasons for their long prison sentences, and no opportunity to inquire about the judicial process.

Dawei Watch, a news outlet reporting on the Tanintharyi Region, which the two journalists were working for at the time of their arrests, issued a statement condemning their sentences saying they had not received a fair trial. It also called for their immediate release and condemned the junta’s illegal detention and arbitrary sentencing of other journalists.

Nan Paw Gay, the Chairman of the Independent Press Council Myanmar (IPCM) said: “Arbitrarily arresting journalists and imposing severe sentences demonstrates a complete lack of judicial oversight. Journalists must be mindful that they are being targeted, whether or not they are in areas under martial law. It is also a threat to the remaining journalists.”

When Ko Myo Myint Oo and Ko Aung San Oo were arrested, Myeik was not under martial law.

According to the Dawei Watch statement when the two journalists were arrested on charges related to their reporting the junta confiscated their phones and laptops and sent them to a military interrogation center, where they were beaten and interrogated for four days before being sent to Myeik Town Prison.

Ko Aung San Oo was sentenced to 20 years in prison on 16 February 2024, and Ko Myo Myint Oo was sentenced to life in prison on 15 May 2024.

Since the February 2021 coup, more than ten domestic news media outlets have had their publishing licenses revoked by the junta. The arrest and imprisonment of journalists is a significant challenge to journalists trying to report freely and fairly on what is happening in Myanmar.

Currently, about 50 journalists remain imprisoned in Myanmar.

Despite calls from international and domestic media groups for the junta to release all imprisoned journalists they remain in detention and the arrest of journalists continues.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."

Due to the ongoing rain, proper shelter is urgently needed. Currently, there are over 400 IDPs, the majority are elderly residents from the villages.”

The junta forces primarily targeted the Launglon Township villages of Maungmagan, Kyauksin, Thabawtseik, and Pyingyi where they have established military bases and bunkers, according to Ko Shae Doe, a spokesperson for the Launglon Township People’s Defence Force (PDF).

He said: “They have established military bases in the villages and are also transporting all available materials from the homes within those villages. The fighting is currently intense on both sides. After that, junta troops are forcibly commandeering civilian vehicles from 6-Mile Village, which is nearby.

These trucks and lorries are then used by soldiers to transport troops and supplies,” a Karen National Union (KNU) officer in Tanintharyi Township said.

Additionally, the junta troops have established checkpoints in Tanintharyi Township, targeting and arresting young people returning from Thailand.

Their forced use of vehicles essential for transporting goods in the region has further exacerbated the economic hardships and affected the livelihoods of local communities, a Tanintharyi Township resident said.

“The checkpoint at the town entrance frequently arrests young people returning from Thailand. With the conscription law now officially enforced, the junta troops have become more aggressive in targeting and arresting youths.

Previously, they used civilian vehicles as mobile shields to avoid being shot at by resistance forces.
Locals allege that the junta deliberately breached two dams on tributaries that flow into the Sittaung River. The Ngalaik Dam on Ngalaik Creek, in Pyinmana Township, in Naypyidaw Council Territory, and the Swar Dam on Swar Creek, in Swar (a.k.a.Hswar) Town, Yedashe Township, Bago Region.

Over 5,000 people living in nearby villages and urban areas have been affected by the flooding, according to a woman helping rescue efforts in Taungoo Township. She also said that the flooding was not due to heavy rainfall and instead, happened because the junta had deliberately breached the two dams.

A resident of Taungoo Township said to KIC: “The junta breached the Ngalaik and Swar dams. Without any rain, the water levels have risen significantly. The water has entered all the villages. Currently, it is affecting over 5,000 residents. Though this is the situation we have seen in eastern Taungoo Township, there has also been significant flooding in the western part of Taungoo Township. The water has affected all the towns and villages, damaging everything, including food supplies. Everyone is facing difficulties.”

Water levels are rising every day. Currently the floodwaters are at head-height, so residents in low lying areas are having to use tyre inner tubes and makeshift rafts to get around.

Wards 8,9 and 10 in the low-lying areas of Taungoo Town have been particularly badly affected by the flooding, as have villages on the bank of the Sittaung River, close to Taungoo Town.

Ko Kyaw Thura, a rescue worker said that local humanitarian organisations are helping flood-affected residents and relocating them to five temporary flood shelters set up in schools located on higher ground in the town.

Ko Kyaw Thura said: “ It has been like this for about three days. Initially, the focus was on rescue operations due to the rising water levels. Once temporary shelters were set up, primary support and essential supplies like food and clean water were provided. Recently, due to insufficient access to drinking water, some areas are experiencing cases of diarrhea and other health issues. Therefore, healthcare services are being provided to address these concerns.”

Currently, about 2,500 people displaced from their homes by the flooding are staying at the five shelters in Taungoo Town. More temporary shelters have also been set up in monasteries in Taungoo Township villages.

The junta has supplied no aid or help and there has been no support from international organisations. Instead, the victims have been relying on donations from people inside Myanmar and from the Myanmar diaspora living abroad, which are being passed on to local humanitarian organisations and community groups who are assisting the flood victims, according to residents of affected areas.

The water level of the Sittaung River has continued to rise, meaning that even more people may become affected by flooding. According to residents, this is the worst flooding Taungoo Town has experienced in its history.

Though it has not been confirmed, it is believed that the flooding has happened because the junta deliberately breached the two dams. The water levels started rising after the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing visited Taungoo Town on 23 August, suggesting that the junta breached the dams shortly after his visit.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."

Troops, members of the junta-aligned Border Guard Force (BGF), and other affiliated groups have been deployed to enforce these inspections.

“Soldiers and BGF members at the Gyaing Bridge are conducting very strict checks. The soldiers threatened to arrest the trucks if they did not show slips proving that they were passing through junta-controlled road sections. This means that the trucks are not allowed to travel from the Kyondoe side, which is controlled by the Karen National Union (KNU) and the People’s Defense Force (PDF). The junta troops warned us that using that road section would mean taxing and supporting the KNU-PDF coalition, and that they would arrest drivers and seize trucks and goods,” a truck driver said.

Additionally, cargo trucks traveling between Hpa-An and Myawaddy are required to pay tolls at multiple checkpoints established by various groups, raising concerns among local traders about the potential for increased goods prices. The heightened threats at these checkpoints are also expected to negatively impact trade.

The junta is currently making desperate efforts to assert control over the trade routes connecting Kyondoe, Kyainseikgyi, Nabu, Htilon, Hpa-An, and Mawlamyine.

In pursuit of this objective, the junta is collaborating with certain BGF factions, the Peace Council (PC), and Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) factions led by Bo Bi to prepare for military operations in the region, according to local sources.

Meanwhile, in recent days, joint resistance forces led by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) have frequently clashed with the junta, resulting in skirmishes across the region’s towns and villages.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."

The number of personnel has increased; it’s no longer just about 10 people, but entire teams now.”

A driver of a passenger vehicle said that in addition to heightened security there are more toll gates collecting money from travellers.

They said: “There has been an increase in barriers, security gates, vehicle checkpoints, and blockades at entry and exit points in areas such as Gyaing Bridge, Zar Tapyin Bridge, Samanya Village, and towns including Hpa-An, Hlaingbwe, Kyondoe, Kawkareik, and Myawaddy.

There has been an increase in the number of toll gates under the guise of security checks. It is a significant inconvenience for us [drivers].”

Karen Information Center (KIC) attempted to contact representatives of the DKBA BGF and the KPC to ask them about their increased collaboration with the junta, but, so far, they have received no reply.

There has been daily fighting in Karen State between the junta and the anti-junta Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) supported by other allied resistance forces in places such as Payathonzu Town and the townships of Hpapun, Kawkareik, Kyainseikgyi, and Myawaddy.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur.
A local aid organization has reported a notable increase in diarrhea cases among displaced individuals in the Tanintharyi Region this month.
An official from the Nway Oo Myittar aid group informed KIC that areas hosting displaced people lack essential resources such as clean drinking water, food, and adequate sanitation, contributing to the surge in diarrhea outbreaks.

“We are still assessing the exact circumstances of the outbreak. The combination of long-term refugees and recently displaced individuals poses challenges in implementing effective relief efforts. While current cases of diarrheal diseases have not yet reached cholera levels, they are most prevalent among adults over 20 years old,” she noted.

In Tanintharyi Region, ongoing conflict in Dawei, Launglon, Thayetchaung, and Palaw townships has driven many residents to seek refuge in forested areas. Displaced individuals face difficulties accessing clean water and medical supplies due to restricted public access imposed by the junta. Furthermore, inadequate housefly-proof toilets in displacement camps are exacerbating the spread of diarrheal diseases, she added.

“The number of diarrhea patients is estimated to be in the hundreds. The rainy season’s damp conditions in forested areas, coupled with inadequate sanitation, appear to exacerbate the spread of diarrhea. At present, our medical resources are insufficient even to treat common cases of diarrhea,” she expressed concern.

Due to ongoing armed conflict in Tanintharyi Region, approximately 20000 long-term war refugees and nearly 40000 temporarily displaced individuals have been uprooted, totaling nearly 60000 displaced persons.

According to local media reports, the number of diarrheal disease cases across Myanmar in July has risen to approximately 700, based on available statistics.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur."
