Good catch. This is some debt that has come in over time with various pull requests and have not been good checking for it. Very open to fixing this.

The "don't mix pointer and value receivers" is only a guideline, not a hard rule. If String() is changed to a pointer receiver it becomes more awkward to work with:

newVersion := v.IncPatch()
return newVersion.String(), nil

instead of this, which doesn't compile if String() is a pointer receiver (cannot call pointer method String on semver.Version)

return v.IncPatch().String(), nil
