This is a breaking API change which was previously bundled with #106.
Although not officially deprecated the docs contain strong encouragement to switch to the newer implementation as soon as it was available.
Having said that, I can't find what made me think it was needed in the first place. It doesn't appear to be a requirement for Java Servlet 5 or 6, so I'm going to defer merging it.
