5.3 Insane gpu usage and unresponsiveness when scrolling through panes

[On MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro]
Experiencing extreme lag and unresponsiveness when trying to scroll or really do anything. Using stats I see the GPU spike all the way up to above 50% usage, it often skips panes going from 1st to 3rd to 5th. When using the buttons instead of the touchpad sometimes it is somewhat useable but still laggy, while others it is just as bad as in the video shown. When not actively doing anything the GPU drops back down to negligible amounts with the app open. I do not have anything intensive open, then gpu and cpu are sitting at <5% when I recorded this screenshot and I have plenty of unused RAM too.

I have tried adjusting settings including Mac resolution and disabling natural scrolling and am still getting the same issue...

Thanks a lot for the report and for including the video - that was really helpful.

Over the past week I’ve been working on a broader performance update, and your report helped pinpoint a few issues in the vertical scrolling path. I’ve now reworked parts of the page switching and rendering logic, and also tightened up some of the folder preview rendering. This should address the skipped panes, row/line desync, and the general lagginess you noticed. It should also make page switching feel noticeably smoother overall.

I’ll continue improving vertical scrolling. It’s still marked as a beta feature because there are a few smaller issues left to iron out, and I expect to keep refining it. Reports like yours are extremely helpful for tracking these down - so thanks again for taking the time to share it.

Please give the next build a try and let me know if you’re still able to reproduce any of the issues.

Horizontal does not make a difference compared to vertical, and I believe I am running latest (at least from GitHub)

(Tried using left/right) Fixed the issues with skipping pages (as far as I can tell). GPU still spikes, but only to around 50% now, however it still freezes like before between pages. Like it starts the animation, pauses for it to load then finishes it. When scrolling slowly it seems to run at like 15FPS, and randomly freezes for a few seconds, GPU also spikes seemingly at random (graph attached) and it dosn't seem correlated with the freezes. However, aside from those spikes the GPU usage is WAY lower (near base level, all photos / video I have taken have been while GPU usage has been around 1% as I only have a web browser open lol) while scrolling very slowly.

Thanks for testing this so thoroughly and for the detailed follow-up - that’s super helpful.

Great to hear that the page skipping issue seems to be resolved on your end. The remaining freezes during transitions sound like something is still blocking the animation/render pipeline briefly, especially with the “start → pause → continue” behavior you described.

The GPU spikes not correlating directly with the freezes is also interesting - that might point more towards synchronization or main-thread stalls rather than purely rendering load.

I’ll take a closer look at this over the next few days and see if I can narrow it down further or improve the transition handling. In the meantime, if you happen to notice any patterns (e.g. specific layouts, number of items, or interaction speed), feel free to share - that kind of detail can really help track it down.

Just a quick follow-up - v0.6.1 is out now 🙂

This update focuses quite a bit on performance, reduced energy usage, and smoothing out UI behavior overall. In particular, I’ve made changes aimed at reducing UI stalls during page transitions and cutting down background work that could interfere with responsiveness.
Given the issues you were seeing (especially the freezes during transitions), it would be really helpful if you could give this version a try and let me know if things feel any smoother on your end.
If you’re still noticing the same behavior, any details on how it presents now would be super useful to help narrow it down further.

Sorry for the incredibly late response (a lot going on plus I got locked out after installing grapheneos it's a whole thing)

Seems to get GPU to sit around 50% now instead of spiking to 100, and doesn't seem to skip over pages
However it still seems to freeze in-between pages, as if it starts the animation, paused to load in the next page, then continues, almost like PS3 era "hidden" loading screens where the game freezes for a second or 2

(Recorded on phone as I wanted to show best how it looks to me without any like screen capture software interfering or taking headroom or anything)
