Where does the data go

This page explains how to query, filter and sort but no mention of how to use that data. Does it go into an array? How do you use that array? Can you name the array if you are querying multiple lists for different data to differentiate?

I eventually figured out the data is set as "Value" to be used in subsequent steps by cruising the poweruser forums and some youtube surfing but would be nice to have a bit more documentation on how that data is saved and used after finding it. If there is another page with that data at least link to that page at the end of the article.
