Error when run The Binding of Issac after REPENTOGON installed

1- to verify your files with steam
2- to do a repair on the launcher
3- Add the launcher as your isaac steam shortcut (this can solve permission issues in some cases)

There is something very strange going on with your windows setup. Even the vanilla game is failing to locate or access your profile directory, though vanilla doesn't crash on it (we are crashing on it admittedly, but its a very unexpected case)

For example, the vanilla game cannot create save backups: [INFO] - Could not open C:\Users\user/Documents/My Games/Binding of Isaac Repentance+//save_backups/20260626.rep+persistentgamedata1.dat for writing!

I'd be a little surprised if the game is remembering your game settings, since the options.ini file is stored around here as well.

The REPENTOGON launcher is able to partially access this location ([INFO] [2026-06-25 17:47:56] Successfully opened and parsed launcher configuration file C:\Users\user\Documents\My Games\repentogon_launcher.ini) but I think it creates directories when they are not found, so we may have created this C:\Users\user folder to begin with.

Overall the user profile directory being C:\Users\user is a little strange, unless your computer's user account is actually just called "user". Still, both the vanilla game and us don't seem to be able to access C:\Users\user/Documents/My Games/Binding of Isaac Repentance+/ for one reason or another

Sorry that probably doesn't immediately offer a solution, just passing along some details we noticed.

Yes,it exists. But it is not an empty folder. And the Chinese path is just what the computer shows in its settings - it's actually in English

Can you open the "Properties" of the "The Binding of Isaac Repentance+" folder, make sure "Read-only" is disabled, then click "Apply"

Once it is finished, try REPENTOGON again and see if its any difference

If that doesn't work, here are two more things to try:

1. Try "Run as administrator" on 'REPENTOGONLauncher.exe"
2. (Important) Search your computer for "Controlled Folder Access" (it is a setting in "Windows Defender" / "Windows Security"), and if it is on, turn it OFF

Note: If "Controlled Folder Access" is the issue, if you want that extra security still you can turn it back on and add repentogon/isaac folders as exceptions

Either you made a new user profile that contains chinese characters (which can cause this error at the moment) or this is just yet another error coming as a result of us being denied proper access to your computer

But it does feel like the main trend I am seeing is that something is preventing us from accessing folders on your computer. Usually its either windows permissions, antivirus protection, controlled folder access, etc... We need to be allowed that access to function properly.

Post the updater.log file from the folder where your REPENTOGONLauncher.exe lives so I can at least confirm the specific reason for the current error, but also maybe double-check any sort of antivirus protection you may have going on
