Problem Statement:
Currently, the ROADM model can account for a certain OSNR contribution in the add/drop stage. This is valid for the cases where the amplifiers in the add/drop stage are fixed to compensate for the losses (which are fixed and known), so the contribution can be indicated in the add-drop-osnr parameter. However, I have found cases where a regular EDFA (the same one used as preamp or booster) is used in the add/drop stage. Thus, the NF will not be fixed as in the previous one, as it will depend on the design.
Currently, I found two workarounds:
- Asume that the amplifier will be configured to compensate exacty the losses of the add/drop stage, get the NF and include it.
- Model the add/drop stage as a separated ROADM.
However, they are both workarounds. Would it be possible to consider including these variable amps as optional in the ROADM?
It would be nice to hear from vendors that implement such architectures. Opinions?
