most distributions nowadays follow usrmerge.
Would you consider changing the target of the symlink to that?
P.S. Related to that I have also prepared various general packaging updates which you are free to take from the upload soon referenced in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/joyent-mdata-client/+bug/2139246 - Please tell me if you also prefer a PR for those.
