OVERVIEW

This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions for installing Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is intended for users performing a clean installation, system upgrade, or evaluation of Windows software.

The instructions below are general and applicable to supported Windows versions at the time of this release. Users should ensure they have valid licenses and installation media prior to beginning the setup process.


PREPARATION

Before starting the installation, complete the following steps:

  1. Backup Important Data

    • Ensure all important files are saved to removable media or a network location.
    • Windows Setup may overwrite existing data.
  2. Verify System Requirements

    • Check processor speed, memory, and disk space requirements for your version of Windows.
    • Minimum recommended configuration should be met to ensure proper operation.
  3. Prepare Installation Media

    • CD-ROM or floppy disk media must be clean and free of scratches.
    • Verify the integrity of downloaded ISO images, if applicable.
  4. Gather Product Keys and License Information

    • Have your valid Microsoft product key available for entry during setup.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  1. Insert the Installation Media

    • Boot the computer from the Windows CD-ROM or floppy disks.
  2. Start the Setup Program

    • Follow on-screen prompts to begin Windows Setup.
    • Select the installation type: Upgrade or Custom (Clean Install).
  3. Partition and Format Drives

    • Use the Setup program to create or select a partition.
    • Format the partition using the recommended file system (NTFS or FAT32).
  4. Copying Files and Installation

    • Setup will copy files to the hard drive.
    • This process may take several minutes depending on hardware performance.
  5. Configure Regional Settings

    • Select language, time zone, keyboard layout, and locale preferences.
  6. Enter Product Key

    • Enter the valid product key provided with your license.
  7. Create User Accounts

    • Setup will prompt to create administrative and standard user accounts.
  8. Finalize Installation

    • Setup will install system components and drivers.
    • The computer may restart multiple times during this process.

POST-INSTALLATION

After Setup completes:

  • Install Drivers and Updates

    • Install hardware drivers and system updates from Microsoft or vendor media.
  • Configure Network Settings

    • Set up TCP/IP, workgroup/domain membership, and shared resources.
  • Install Applications

    • Reinstall applications and restore backed-up data.
  • Verify System Functionality

    • Confirm that the desktop, Start menu, and system utilities operate correctly.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Always keep installation media and product keys in a safe location.
  • If upgrading, ensure that all applications are compatible with the new version of Windows.
