Tldr, local storage is cheap & quick to use, but when we have updating configs & managing versioning of the extension, it can get a bit annoying/complicated

The alternatives are pretty bad/pointless performance wise, so the best option is to either fully swap over (I've written some wrapper libraries in the past that could help) or add in some versioning things that make tracking what we've changed easy so we can "fix" users local data if needed.
