Support multilingual pages via a toggle

On the website for InterHop made with Jekyll, there is an "EN/FR" button that allows switching between french and english language.

The code for that website is at framagit. According to their README they're using this to make the site mulilingual.

I was wondering if you would be interested in implementing this? If not, i'll do it for myself but would prefer to avoid diverging from your repo too much. Alternatively if you want me to make a PR just tell me.

The Academic Pages template already has some limited static support for multiple languages, so expanding upon that to dynamically switch between languages would be a really good feature to add. Given I'm behind on the v0.9 milestone I'm going to tag it as v1.0, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't be added sooner if there was a PR or a solid reference example I could look at.

I just took a deeper look at the tutorial and I'm afraid I don't have the skills to figure out the "too obvious to explain" bits as I'm a beginner at jekyll.

So I very probably won't do it and if I do it's going to be purely ai based. I'll be sure to ping you if I end up doing it but do not wait for me unfortunately

There is now a language selector at the top right between FR and EN:

It seems to work fine. Including:

I merged the branch and rebased it a bit to make it clearer. There were quite a few things claude struggled with so some commits were back and forth and ended up merged as a single commit. Hopefully the code is still somewhat readable for you.

Thanks! I'll take a closer look at the commits over the next couple days to see where things land. Something that is standing out to me is the directory structure which I'll need to give some thought for the best way to address that from the standpoint of the template. I'm not sure I want to default to having everything under /en/ for the basic template since the is built-in support for swapping the language elements if you just want to have your site in a different language. Once I get a better feel for the code changes needed I might write a "configuration script" that updates the directory structure and sets the relevant flag in _config.yml to set things up though.
