Do you have gnu make installed or bsd make?

I have both.
/usr/bin/make which is part of "freebsd base".
And gmake gmake --version => GNU Make 4.4.1
This one works mostly with most linux makefiles
But thanks for the answer for a FreeBSD question.

On https://github.com/ada-game-framework/sdlada/blob/master/alire.toml#L32 change make to gmake and see if that works.

In fact, try:
