avay-risal/README.md

👋 Hi there, I'm Avay Risal, Ph.D.

I'm a Hydrologist (Groundwater Modeler) at the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) with over 5 years of prior postdoctoral research experience at Texas A&M University and the University of Maryland. I specialize in developing, calibrating, and interpreting numerical groundwater flow models, with a strong focus on MODFLOW‑based frameworks

What I Do

  • Develop, calibrate, and interpret numerical groundwater model using - MODFLOW and/or FloPy
  • Groundwater budget analysis using ArcGIS Pro, and Python ‑driven workflows
  • Develop, use, or manipulate programs/scripts for model data extraction, adjustments to model files, and/or to process and manipulate ASCII data files for scientific applications.
  • Research background on hydrologic, water quality, and agricultural modeling - SWAT, HSPF, APEX, and HEC-RAS
  • Skilled on geospatial analysis - ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine
  • Applied remote sensing in research ENVI, ERDAS IMAGINE, and satellite datasets
  • Experience in programming in Python and R for data analysis, visualization, and model automation
  • Research experience in watershed modeling, and water quality improvement

Current Projects

  • Co-ordinated technical evaluation of 2026 Joint Planning DFCs and computed MAG for GMA 6 and 15 to support state water planning
    • Reviewed consultant-developed DFCs across GMAs for technical consistency
    • Validated model inputs used in GAMs
    • Executed predictive GAM simulations to convert DFCs into sustainable MAG estimates
    • Calculated MAG by "County", "Basin", "RWPA", "GCD", and "GMA" through aggregation

Past Projects

  • Improving SWAT model simulations through land-use specific calibration with remote sensing data (ET, LAI, NPP)
  • Integrating soil moisture datasets (e.g., SMAP) for enhanced streamflow predictions
  • Developing reproducible workflows for large-scale hydrologic modeling
