I use this meter to calculate the costs of my powergrid. Basically it works well and i like it how things are setup. But, the problem that I have is, is that in the end my value is shown in the sensor with a dollar sign behind. I can place an Icon in the beginning off the sensor; but not behind the value. I would like to see that with an euro sign.

Would like a method to change to dollar to euro within the sensor; maybe text value where I can fill this in myself. Or maybe implement a workaround for this (which is not overwritten with an update) Or use the value sign which is in the General page used within Home Assistant

Thanks for your submission. I will have to look into the code, it should have used the currency set in your general settings.

I had a look to see whether I could do a pull and an easy fix but not sure I'm up to it. I can see where it's meant to default to $ if UoM is not set, but my normal Energy dashboard (the built in HA one) correctly shows costs as £1.23 where this still says 1.23 $

I guess I could maybe fix it by fiddling with templates and strings?

There's your bug, clear as day:

self._attr_icon = "mdi:currency-usd" if icon is None else icon
self._attr_native_unit_of_measurement = CURRENCY_DOLLAR if uom is None else uom

When no uom is passed in (which is the normal case — you don't configure it manually), it hardcodes CURRENCY_DOLLAR (which is "$" from homeassistant.const). Same for the icon.

The correct behaviour would be to derive the unit from the calculation sensor's unit_of_measurement at startup — similar to how the core integration platform does it. The start() method already receives attributes but does nothing with them:

Worth raising an issue on cabberley/utility_meter_evolved with this snippet. The fix would be something like reading the calc sensor's unit_of_measurement during async_added_to_hass and setting self._attr_native_unit_of_measurement from it when uom is None.

In the meantime, the only clean workaround is to go back to the plain utility_meter YAML config — it correctly inherits the unit from the source sensor chain.

The file is at /config/custom_components/utility_meter_evolved/sensor.py. Two targeted changes:

Fix 1 — use HA's configured currency instead of hardcoded $:

self._attr_icon = "mdi:currency-usd" if icon is None else icon
self._attr_native_unit_of_measurement = hass.config.currency if uom is None else uom

hass is already passed into __init__ so it's available. hass.config.currency returns "EUR" based on your HA settings, which is the ISO code HA uses for monetary sensors.

Fix 2 — or derive it from the calc sensor's unit at startup:

Fix 1 is simpler and more robust. Fix 2 is more semantically correct but depends on the calc sensor being available at startup.

After editing, do a full HA restart (not just reload) since it's a custom component. The $ should become EUR (or € if Fix 2 parses it from your price sensor's unit).
