I would, but I don't know how to fix this. The detection part is working fine, but both

WebSettingsCompat.setForceDark(settings, forceDarkMode);
and
WebSettingsCompat.setForceDarkStrategy

are deprecated as it seems.

Quoting the docs:

Deprecated
The "force dark" model previously implemented by WebView was complex and didn't interoperate well with current Web standards for prefers-color-scheme and color-scheme. In apps with targetSdkVersion ≥ android. os. Build. VERSION_CODES. TIRAMISU this API is a no-op and WebView will always use the dark style defined by web content authors if the app's theme is dark. To customize the behavior, refer to setAlgorithmicDarkeningAllowed.

I use the plugin myself and have not noticed any problems so far. So unfortunately I can't debug it. I am therefore closing this issue. Feel free to create a PR if you find a solution.

Did you test with Android API version 35? Or do you have some other things setup in your main activity or you styles.xml that night account for this?

Yes, I tested it with a Pixel 6a. Everything seems to work there (even without the plugin). No, I don't have any special styles.

For the record: After hours spend on this I figured that the issue was indeed something in styles.xml though I can't exactly say what. Here is the fixing commit in case anyone is interested:
