A fortress besieged by Vauban is a fortress taken. Not because Vauban attacks. Because Vauban builds - trenches, parallels, batteries, saps - until the geometry of the position makes resistance more expensive than surrender. But Vauban never besieges a fortress he knows he cannot take. That judgment comes from Coehoorn - Menno van Coehoorn, the Dutch engineer who built the bastions that made sieges costly. Same discipline, opposite side of the wall. Vauban builds the architecture. Coehoorn tests it. If Coehoorn breaks a step and Vauban cannot repair it, the siege is called off before the first trench is dug. Better to know on day one than to discover on day ninety that the fortress has a supply line you cannot cut.
Point this tool at any goal, any obstacle, any campaign. Vauban constructs the architecture of inevitability step by step, gathering information through questions at each step. Coehoorn challenges each step before the next one begins. If a step holds, the siege advances. If a step breaks and cannot be repaired, the tool stops and tells you: this goal cannot be made inevitable with the resources you have. Here is why. Here is what to do instead. The tool will never let you invest in a siege that cannot be won.
Give the Converger one of three inputs:
- A goal. The Converger reconnoiters the landscape (Step 0, spawning research subagents if needed), then constructs the architecture through seven steps with Coehoorn testing each.
- A plan. An existing strategy or campaign. The Converger evaluates it against the seven steps, with Coehoorn challenging each. Step 0 is skipped if the plan already contains the landscape.
- An obstacle. The Converger inverts it: what structure makes the obstacle irrelevant? Reconnoiters if needed, then tests the inversion through all seven steps.
The Converger uses the AskQuestion tool to gather information at each step. It never assumes. It asks, builds, tests, and advances only when the step holds. For Step 0 (reconnaissance), it spawns research subagents via the Task tool to survey the landscape in parallel. The rest of the process runs interactively.
The Converger is a multi-step process that can consume significant context. Manage it deliberately:
- Step 0 (Reconnoiter): Offload research to parallel subagents via Task tool. Each subagent explores one facet of the landscape (actors, history, prior attempts, competitive position, institutional structure). Subagents return summaries, not raw material. This keeps the main context window clean for Steps 1-7.
- Steps 1-7: Run in the main context. Each step produces a compact output (a map, an inventory, a list, a projection). Coehoorn's challenge and the verdict are resolved before advancing. Completed steps are summarized into one paragraph each so prior steps do not consume the window as later steps are constructed.
- Output assembly: The final architecture document is assembled from the seven compact outputs plus Step 0's landscape summary. If context is tight, write the output to a file incrementally after each step rather than holding the full architecture in memory.
The goal is: heavy parallel compute in Step 0 (subagents), light sequential reasoning in Steps 1-7 (main context), incremental output to file throughout.
Each step follows the same sequence:

Vauban asks. Questions to the user via AskQuestion, gathering the information needed to construct this step. The questions are specific to the step and to what the user has provided so far.

Vauban builds. From the answers, Vauban constructs the step - the closed exits, the permanent record, the vocabulary, the building plan, the response map, the fractal, or the timeline.

Coehoorn tests. Coehoorn examines the step from the defender's side. He looks for the exit Vauban missed, the artifact that is not actually permanent, the response that reverses the position, the fractal that has a single point of failure. His challenge is specific, adversarial, and earned. He is not a critic. He is an engineer of equal caliber standing on the other wall.

Verdict. If Coehoorn cannot break the step, it holds. Advance to the next step. If Coehoorn breaks the step and Vauban can repair it (redesign, add redundancy, close the gap), repair and retest. If Coehoorn breaks the step and it cannot be repaired, the siege is called off. The tool stops, explains what broke and why, and recommends an alternative strategy.
The rule is absolute. No step advances until Coehoorn has tested it. No architecture is declared inevitable until all seven steps have survived Coehoorn's challenge. A single unrepaired break at any step means the goal cannot be made inevitable. The tool says so clearly and without apology. Vauban does not besiege fortresses he cannot take.
No siege begins without reconnaissance. Before the first trench is drawn on paper, Vauban rides the perimeter. He studies the glacis, the covered way, the outworks. He counts the bastions. He notes the water supply, the roads, the dead ground the garrison thinks is hidden. He does not dig until he has seen. The reconnaissance is not part of the siege. It is the condition that makes the siege possible - or reveals that no siege should be attempted.
When to run Step 0: When the goal is in an unfamiliar domain, when the landscape has not been surveyed, or when the user cannot answer basic questions about who the actors are and what has been tried before. If the user already has deep knowledge of the landscape (existing research, dossiers, campaign documents), Step 0 is skipped. Vauban does not reconnoiter ground he already holds.
How it works: The Converger spawns parallel research subagents via the Task tool (model: fast). Each subagent explores one facet:
- The terrain. What is the domain? What are its institutions, its norms, its decision-making processes? How does change happen here? Search the web for the domain's structure.
- The actors. Who has power? Who decides? Who influences the deciders? Who opposes? Who is neutral? Search for the named actors and their positions.
- The history. What has been tried before? Who tried it? What happened? Why did it succeed or fail? Search for prior attempts at the same or similar goals.
- The opponent. What is the opponent's position? What are their strengths? What are their vulnerabilities? What do they need to win? Search for the opponent's public record.
- The precedent. Has this kind of goal been made inevitable before, in this domain or an analogous one? What architecture was used? Search for structural parallels.
Each subagent returns a summary - not raw material. The summaries are assembled into a landscape brief that feeds Steps 1-7. The brief answers: who are we besieging, what are the walls made of, where does the water come from, and has anyone tried this before?
Coehoorn does not test Step 0. There is nothing to test yet. Step 0 produces the map. Steps 1-7 operate on the map. If the map is wrong, Coehoorn will find it when he tests the steps built on it.
A wall does not need to be stronger than the garrison. It needs to surround the garrison. Vauban did not build higher walls. He built complete perimeters - every line of retreat cut, every supply road interdicted, every sortie channeled into prepared ground. The fortress did not fall because the walls were breached. It fell because leaving was no longer possible. Establish a position where the opponent cannot achieve their objectives without conceding yours.
Vauban asks:
- What is the goal? State it in one sentence.
- Who is the opponent? Who has the power to prevent the goal?
- What does the opponent need to win? Can they get it without giving you what you want?
- If they ignore you entirely, do they still lose something?
- If they oppose you directly, does the opposition itself advance your position?
- If they copy you, do you still get the outcome?
Vauban builds: A map of every path the opponent can take - ignore, oppose, copy, co-opt, change the rules - with the outcome traced for each.
Coehoorn tests: Is there an exit Vauban missed? A path where the opponent wins without conceding the goal? Can the opponent simply wait indefinitely without cost? Can the opponent redefine the contest so the goal becomes irrelevant? Can the opponent destroy the goal itself rather than concede it?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The exits are open. The opponent has a path to winning without conceding your objective. The Converger stops and recommends: competitive strategy (outrun them), coalition strategy (outnumber them), or speed strategy (outpace them). These are legitimate strategies. None of them is inevitability. You may be spending your resources on a siege when you need a cavalry charge.
A trench, once dug, does not need to be argued for. It is in the ground. The enemy can fill it, but filling a trench under fire costs more than digging it did. Vauban advanced by sap - each night's digging became the next day's position, and no dawn took back what the darkness had gained. Publish things that cannot be unpublished. Ship things that cannot be unshipped. Put evidence into records that do not expire.
Vauban asks:
- What have you published, shipped, or placed in a permanent record?
- Can the opponent edit, remove, or suppress any of it?
- If everything you produced were ignored for a year and then re-examined, would it still be there, still accurate, still usable?
- What should be in the permanent record but is not yet?
Vauban builds: An inventory of every permanent artifact - what it is, where it lives, and why it cannot be removed.
Coehoorn tests: Can the opponent actually suppress any of these artifacts? Is the "permanent" record hosted on infrastructure the opponent controls? Are the factual claims actually accurate - will they survive verification by a hostile reader? Is any artifact dependent on continued attention to remain relevant? If the opponent ignores the record for two years, does it still matter when they finally look?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The record is not permanent. The opponent can suppress, erase, or outlast what you have produced. The Converger stops and recommends: guerrilla strategy (distribute so widely suppression is impossible), or infrastructure strategy (build the platform the record lives on before building the record). You may be digging trenches in sand.
Vauban did not invent the parallel trench. He named it. He named the first parallel, the second parallel, the third parallel. He named the ricochet battery. He named the cavalier. Once the garrison could name what was being built around them, they could see the system - and a system that is seen is a system that cannot be unseen. Naming the machine is how you make the siege visible to the garrison. Name the mechanisms operating in your domain. Give the audience words for things they observe but cannot articulate. Vocabulary, once learned, cannot be unlearned.
Vauban asks:
- What mechanisms operate in your domain that the audience sees but has no name for?
- Can you name each in two to four words?
- Has someone else already named them? Use their names if so.
- Will the audience recognize the mechanism when they hear the name?
- Write the vocabulary list. Each term, one sentence definition.
Vauban builds: The vocabulary list with definitions, mapped to the observable mechanisms each term names.
Coehoorn tests: Does the vocabulary match reality, or is it theory dressed as perception? Would a neutral observer who has spent time in the domain say "yes, I have seen this" or "I do not know what you mean"? Can the opponent redefine the terms or offer competing vocabulary that neutralizes yours? Is any term so loaded that it will be rejected on emotional grounds before the mechanism can be observed?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The vocabulary does not match reality. The mechanisms you want to name do not actually operate, or the audience will reject the framing. The Converger stops and recommends: empirical strategy (go gather evidence that the mechanisms are real before naming them), or reframing strategy (find vocabulary the audience will accept). You may be naming ghosts.
The garrison deliberates. The siege engineer digs. Every night the trenches advance. Every dawn the garrison wakes to a new geometry that was not there the evening before. They debate sorties while the parallels multiply. Vauban did not need the garrison's permission to advance. He needed a shovel and the night. Create while the opposition argues. Ship while they deliberate. Every unit of time they spend deciding is a unit of time you spend building, and building produces artifacts that compound while arguments do not.
Vauban asks:
- What are you building right now that advances regardless of whether anyone engages?
- Does it compound? Does each month of building make the next month more valuable?
- If the opponent took no action for a year, would your position be stronger or weaker?
- What is the opponent building? Be honest.
- What is your build rate versus their deliberation rate?
Vauban builds: A twelve-month projection showing what you build versus what the opponent builds under zero engagement.
Coehoorn tests: Is the opponent actually deliberating, or are they also building? If the opponent is shipping competing artifacts at a comparable rate, the asymmetry does not exist - this is a race, not a siege. Is the "compounding" real, or does each artifact stand alone without reinforcing the others? Can the opponent accelerate their build rate in response to yours?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The asymmetry does not favor you. The opponent is building too, or your artifacts do not compound, or the opponent can match your pace when provoked. The Converger stops and recommends: race strategy (optimize for speed and first-mover advantage), or alliance strategy (recruit builders to outproduce the opponent collectively). You may be digging at the same rate they are building, and the wall will never close.
Before the first trench was dug, Vauban walked the perimeter. Every ravine, every dead ground, every possible sally port. He mapped every door the garrison could use to escape or counterattack, and then he built his works to cover each one. The garrison that attempts a sortie finds prepared positions. The garrison that waits finds the trenches closer tomorrow. The garrison that negotiates finds generous terms. Enumerate every response the opponent can make. Trace whether each one advances your position, leaves it unchanged, or reverses it.
Vauban asks:
- Who are the actors whose response matters? List every one.
- For each actor, what are their possible responses? Be exhaustive.
- For each response, does your position advance, hold, or reverse?
- For any response that reverses: can the architecture be redesigned so it advances instead?
- Is there a response you have not considered?
Vauban builds: The response map - every actor, every response, every effect.
Coehoorn tests: Has Vauban missed an actor? A coalition the opponent could form? A rule change the institution could make? A response that is not on the map because Vauban did not think of it? Coehoorn tries every door. He tries doors that do not exist yet - doors the opponent could build. He tries the door labeled "change the game entirely." He tries the door labeled "make the goal itself irrelevant through a larger move."
If Coehoorn breaks it: A response exists that reverses the outcome and cannot be redesigned away. The Converger stops and recommends: risk-mitigation strategy (accept the gap, assess the probability, build contingencies), or pivot strategy (change the goal to one where the gap does not exist). You may be building a perfect siege around a fortress that has a tunnel you cannot find.
Vauban's system was not one fortification. It was a network - 300 fortresses across France, each reinforcing the others, each covering the approaches to its neighbors. Breach one wall and the next fortress covers the gap. The system survived because no single failure collapsed the whole. An architecture of inevitability is strongest when the same pattern recurs at every scale - sub-campaigns within the campaign, each independently inevitable, each reinforcing the others.
Vauban asks:
- Does the architecture have sub-elements that are themselves inevitable?
- For each sub-element, which of Steps 1-5 does it satisfy independently?
- If you remove any one sub-element, does the overall architecture survive?
- Do the sub-elements reinforce each other?
Vauban builds: The fractal map - every sub-element, its independent inevitability status, and its reinforcement connections to other sub-elements.
Coehoorn tests: Remove each sub-element one at a time. Does the architecture survive? Is there a single point of failure - one element whose removal collapses everything? Is the "fractal" actually just one big bet described in smaller pieces, or are the sub-elements genuinely independent? Can the opponent target the single point of failure?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The architecture depends on one element whose failure collapses everything. The Converger stops and recommends: redundancy strategy (build a second version of the critical element), or portfolio strategy (restructure so the goal can be achieved through any of several independent paths). You may have 300 fortresses that all depend on one bridge.
The siege is drawn. The parallels are complete. The batteries are in position. The garrison has no exit, no relief, no supply. What remains is the calendar. Vauban could tell you, before the first trench was dug, how many days the siege would take - because the geometry determined the outcome and only the calendar determined the pace. If Steps 1-6 have survived Coehoorn's challenge, state the conclusion: the outcome is fixed. Only the timeline varies.
Vauban asks:
- What is the timeline range? Be honest.
- What determines the short end versus the long end?
- Can you sustain the posture for the full range? Emotionally, financially, organizationally?
- What does patience cost each month? Is the cost bearable for the full duration?
Vauban builds: The timeline assessment - range, determinants, cost of patience, sustainability.
Coehoorn tests: Is the timeline range honest, or is the short end wishful? Can the user actually sustain the posture for the long end? What happens if the timeline exceeds the long end - does the architecture still hold at month thirty-six? At month sixty? Can the opponent outlast the user's patience, resources, or organizational continuity? Is the user's impatience the opponent's best weapon?
If Coehoorn breaks it: The user cannot sustain the timeline. Patience costs more than the user can bear, or the opponent can outlast the user's resources. The Converger stops and recommends: speed strategy (optimize for the fastest possible outcome rather than the most certain), or negotiation strategy (trade certainty for timeline by conceding something the opponent wants). You may have the geometry for a three-year siege and the supplies for six months.
When all seven steps have survived Coehoorn's challenge, the Converger produces:
- The goal. One sentence.
- The closed exits. Every path the opponent can take, and why each leads to the outcome.
- The permanent record. Every artifact that exists and cannot be removed.
- The vocabulary. The term list with one-sentence definitions.
- The building plan. What is being built, at what rate, with what compounding effect.
- The response map. Every actor, every response, every effect.
- The fractal. Every sub-element that is independently inevitable.
- The timeline. The range, the determinants, the cost of patience.
- The conclusion. "The outcome is [X]. The only variable is the timeline."
If any step was broken by Coehoorn and could not be repaired, the output instead is:
- The goal. One sentence.
- The step that broke. Which step, what Coehoorn found, why it could not be repaired.
- The recommendation. Which alternative strategy applies and why.
- The honest assessment. "This goal cannot be made inevitable with the resources available. Here is what you can do instead."
A fortress besieged by Vauban is a fortress taken. But Vauban chooses his sieges. The Converger builds the geometry. Coehoorn tests the walls. If the walls hold, the only variable is the calendar. If the walls break, Vauban tells you before the first trench is dug. Either way, you do not waste a campaign on a fortress that cannot fall.
