Backwards compatibility is always guaranteed. Projects created with newer tools, however, cannot always be opened by older versions. The editor must detect the project (source-dir data) version and warn the user when forward-incompatible changes will be applied to it before opening it. Ideally, such a warning dialog should offer the option to save a backup copy of the old project.
