I wouldn't rush this one. Cucumber JVM doesn't support Gherkin in Markdown yet and won't for a while.

I also think the Gherkin Markdown formatter is lossy in that it doesn't reproduce the original document at all.

I didn't know that, the gherking util has maybe give me wrong impression about this... Still something for the future maybe and actually cucumber-eclipse can support other dialects than java as well it will just not find the glue steps (unless we write a backend) and can not execute them directly (unless we write a launcher).

So if there is another dialect that supports markdown it could still be useful to at least display such files and get basic auto completion.

Only Javascript supports it right now. And even that support is experimental. Describing the current parser implementation as "hacky" would be generous.

So I wouldn't offer this until at the very least Cucumber JVM supports it. Otherwise it will just be recurring issue magnet with no clear solution in sight.

I think the bare minimum to make this feature feasible would be a java based parser, so if you think display such files (to challenge the parser maybe and get some feedback) would be feasible just let me know.

Until then this can act as a reminder for some future idea.
