Summary

Android builds are failing with tar: Cannot open: Permission denied errors for all images in a specific assets directory. iOS builds work without any issues.

Command Used

eas build --profile development --platform android --clear-cache

Error Message

tar: assets/images/das_isser_der_raccoon_fuers_leben/basis_image_with_eyes.png: Cannot open: Permission denied

This error occurs for all images in the assets/images/das_isser_der_raccoon_fuers_leben/ directory.

Any guidance on resolving this would be greatly appreciated!

Fun Fact:

if I modify eas.json

it's working fine, but I have no idea what is the real reason for this problem...

@JonaxelN No sorry, spend more then 5 hours, but didn't get it to work. But "requireCommit": true is a workaround which is okay for me

So, If I modify eas.json with the above code, the permission denied error will dissapear?

hi there! we are also not sure what causes this issue. we recommend using the requireCommit solution mentioned above in #3319 (comment)

adding requireCommit will help because that changes how we prepare the archive - EAS CLI will use git clone --depth 1 to prepare the archive that is uploaded in that case (learn more). otherwise, we use another algorithm that follows that same behavior as closely as we reasonably can (again, more info here). the reason why this exists is because many people do not want to have to commit their changes in order to run a build, they often want to do it with a dirty git index.

if you are able to investigate why this is happening on your machines (perhaps using claude?) it would be helpful! https://expo.fyi/eas-build-archive explains how you manually call into the archive process for debugging with eas build:inspect. let us know what you find!
