AppMap data indexing is slow

Sometimes the re-indexing of AppMap data files takes in the order of minutes, or appears to not refresh at all. It's been reported that restarting IntelliJ can fix the issue (see #892 (comment)).

Is the actual indexing taking several minutes, i.e. the progress about indexing in the status bar is showing for several minutes, or is the view of available AppMap files updated a few minutes after the AppMaps were created on disk?

A few more details about the setup would help to debug this. For example:
Where are the updated AppMap files located?
Is that folder marked as excluded?
