Description

BountyPay is a GitHub-native bounty app for funding open-source issues with crypto rewards. Sponsors attach a bounty to a GitHub issue, funds are held in escrow, and contributors are paid when their pull request merges and closes the issue.

The sponsor workflow is:

  1. Install the BountyPay GitHub App.
  2. Select a GitHub issue.
  3. Set a bounty amount and deadline.
  4. Fund the bounty with a supported token.
  5. Wait for a contributor to solve the issue through the normal GitHub pull request process.

The contributor workflow is:

  1. Find an open bounty.
  2. Submit a pull request that fixes the issue.
  3. Have the PR reviewed and merged by the maintainer.
  4. Receive the bounty automatically in the connected wallet.

BountyPay is relevant to the Gitcoin Funding Directory because it is a small-task funding tool for open-source projects. It turns GitHub issues into funded work packages without requiring a full grants round, separate project management system, or manual payout process. The homepage highlights secure escrow, automatic payouts, GitHub-native workflow, multi-chain support, refund protection, and transparent bounty activity.

Strengths:

  • GitHub-native workflow reduces context switching for maintainers and contributors.
  • Escrow gives contributors more confidence that the reward is actually funded.
  • Automatic payout after merged PR can reduce manual follow-up.
  • Contributors receive the full bounty amount according to the FAQ.
  • Supports USDC on Base and MUSD on Mezo, giving sponsors stablecoin options.
  • Refund protection helps sponsors recover funds if work is not completed by the deadline.

Limitations:

  • Repositories need the BountyPay GitHub App installed.
  • Contributors must link a wallet through BountyPay.
  • Current token support is limited to USDC on Base and MUSD on Mezo.
  • The model is optimized for GitHub issues and merged PRs, not ambiguous work or non-code deliverables.
  • Maintainer review and merge speed still determine whether contributors can get paid.
  • A platform fee is charged when sponsors fund bounties.
