Please bring back no-alt-screen

Describe the bug

alt-screen is so much worse for usability.

• No scroll bar - can't quickly go back in history
• Can't find text in the history - Terminal's find can only see the current screen
• Can't see history while reviewing a large file change
• Can't press Enter to copy after selecting
• Can't see the context of the session after exiting (or when terminal is restored after restart)

And more I can't think of right now.

Couldn't agree more.

I seriously need a proper no-alt-screen mode.
I rely on traditional terminal scrollback way more than the fancy alt-screen stuff—it just fits my workflow better.
I even go as far as force-disabling mouse reporting in TUIs.

Ever since alt-screen became a thing, I’ve always launched with no-alt-screen.
Being forced into alt-screen is incredibly frustrating.

Also, copying (as in copy-paste) does not work without --no-alt-screen under docker sandbox run copilot at least under Mac Terminal. Just beeps and does not copy on Cmd-C, and shows spawn xclip ENOENT on right click. Installing xclip in the container obviously leads to no display error instead.

Unless I can find another workaround this is fatal, so bringing this option back would be much appreciated.

Please bring it back at least it doesn't work in windows terminal, ssh and tmux, it's so disappointing; it works on some minor terminals like chromebook costini but not others;

I found a workaround for the tmux preventing copy:
these in config(like ~/.tmux.conf):

set -s set-clipboard on
set -g allow-passthrough on

tmux source-file ~/.tmux.conf

or from cmdline:

tmux set -s set-clipboard on
tmux set -g allow-passthrough on

at least this way the simple selection of text causes the text to be copied back to windows

I was suffering through this issue too, and for a particularly lame reason - the thing that made it worse for me is that I never (until now) had to learn the "finger short cut" for scrolling using my laptop trackpad (on the surface, it's two fingers dragging up or down).

I still miss the scroll bars working, of course.
