ENV variable GITHUB_TOOLSETS not working in Gemin-CLI Extensions

I have tried setting the ENV Variable GITHUB_TOOLSETS="actions" but it doesn't seem to recognize it so always shows the same mcp default actions

Steps to reproduce the behavior

1. Install Gemini-CLI extension as per instructions
2. Set GITHUB_TOOLSETS="actions" in .env file
3. in Gemini-Cli => /mcp list shows same 40 default tools regardless

It's not recognizing GITHUB_TOOLSETS variable setting.

The GITHUB_TOOLSETS environment variable is relevant only when using the local MCP server. When installing the Gemini CLI extension, the remote MCP server is setup. Its configuration (i.e., gemini-extension.json) can be found under ~/.gemini/extensions/github.

To configure toolsets in the remote MCP server, as per the documentation, you have two options:

Option 1: Set the X-MCP-Toolsets header

Edit your gemini-extension.json file and add the header with a comma-separated list of toolsets you want to enable:

}

Option 2: Use the specific toolset URL (note: this approach works for single toolsets only)

Alternatively, you can modify httpUrl directly:
