Non-bare repo reported as bare

I have some repos that are not bare but reported as bare ... gitui early exits with

invalid path
please run gitui inside of a non-bare git repository

I have some weird use cases where the repo is touched by multiple entities (bots) so the permission might be messed up. git rev-parse --is-bare-repository returns false but gitui complains it's being started from a bare repo. Is there anything I can check in .git to see what falsely triggers the bare repo check in gitui? regular git commands runs fine...
