I try to find some tool which restores the original / legacy style Alt-Tab switch dialog where window icons are arranged in columns and rows.

The columns and rows layout is much faster to "digest". Let me show you what I mean:

This is the classic look, I don't need to scan the Alt-Tab dialog from left to right to find the application I need:

With only a single line, the icons to choose from spread horizontally over the full monitor, it's harder to find what you are looking for:

Maybe somebody agrees? o)
Maybe you have the time ad motivation to add a multi-column view like we were used to since Windows 95 or something? o)

Thank you for the program, it is already useful.
The Win11 Alt-Tab view is just horrible and slow as well.

I added a multi-row layout option on latest pre-release. In settings, set "Icons per row" to something greater than 0 (7 to mimic legacy according to the screenshot you posted). Please give a try 🙂
I add to modify a bit whitespaces to keep a constant spacing horizontally and vertically, while keeping name display under each icon.
This needs a bit more polish.

What would make this even better, is a full line (with minimal width?) to show more of the window title, just like the oldshool alt-tab dialog had. It might sound like I am "attached to the past", but being able to see the full (or more at least of the) window title is a productivity enhancement. The short few characters below an icon do not really help to find the right window. I have the same applications opened multiple times or a single application openes multiple windows, as you can see in my screenshots. I run the icons "extra" large now, to see at least some of the window title, if there would be a dedicated line for this, I would go "small" with the icons again, like we had it in the past.

This is going into the right direction for sure! o) The more this tool works like I need, the more I would love to see a TrayIcon integration as well. It is kind of unusual to search and remember how to get into the settings! o)

In general, I try to find a compromise between different preferences and layout options, and I expose new options with care, as it then gets harder to maintain. The first inspiration was MacOS behavior, thus the app name placement.
But I'm OK with exposing new stuff when it makes sense, so I'll probably add something like that 👍

Tray icon is on the todo 🙂 I prioritize features based on a subjective "benefits / time" ratio tickets, so for now I did not find the time to add it, but it's definitely something AAS shoud have 👍
