Feature Implementation Tracker

Overview

This document tracks the implementation status of all features in the OpenStack VM Lifecycle Management API. Each feature includes acceptance criteria, dependencies, and implementation notes.

Core Infrastructure

F-001: Project Structure Setup

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Set up the foundational project directory structure with proper organization.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create /app directory with subdirectories (models, services, repositories, routes)
  • Create /tests directory
  • Create /docs directory
  • Set up Python virtual environment
  • Initialize git repository

Dependencies: None

Implementation Notes:

  • Used standard Python project structure
  • Separated concerns into distinct modules

F-002: Dependency Management

Status: ⬜ Not Started Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Define all project dependencies with pinned versions.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create requirements.txt with all dependencies
  • Pin versions for reproducibility
  • Include FastAPI, Uvicorn, Pydantic, pytest, httpx
  • Test installation in clean environment

Dependencies: F-001

Implementation Notes:

  • Use pip freeze for version pinning
  • Separate dev dependencies if needed

F-003: Environment Configuration

Status: ⬜ Not Started Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Set up configuration management with environment variables.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create app/config.py for configuration loading
  • Create .env.example template
  • Add .env to .gitignore
  • Support environment-based configuration

Dependencies: F-001

Implementation Notes:

  • Use pydantic-settings for config management
  • Include API version, log level, etc.

F-004: Git Configuration

Status: ⬜ Not Started Priority: High Estimated Time: 3 minutes

Description: Configure Git to ignore unnecessary files.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create comprehensive .gitignore for Python
  • Ignore virtual environment, cache files, IDE files
  • Ignore .env and other secrets
  • Ignore __pycache__ and .pyc files

Dependencies: None

Implementation Notes:

  • Use standard Python .gitignore template

API Endpoints - CRUD

F-101: Create VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 8 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms endpoint to create new VM instances.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM creation request with name, flavor, image
  • Validate input using Pydantic models
  • Generate unique UUID for VM
  • Assign random IP address
  • Return 201 Created with VM details
  • Handle validation errors (400, 422)

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_create_vm_success, test_create_vm_duplicate_name, test_create_vm_invalid_name, test_create_vm_invalid_flavor

Implementation Notes:

  • Initial status should be STOPPED
  • Set created_at and updated_at timestamps

F-102: List VMs Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 7 minutes

Description: Implement GET /api/v1/vms endpoint with pagination and filtering.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Return paginated list of VMs
  • Support page and page_size query parameters
  • Support status filter query parameter
  • Return total count, page info
  • Default page_size=10, max=100
  • Return 200 OK with list response

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_list_vms_empty, test_list_vms_with_items, test_list_vms_pagination, test_list_vms_with_status_filter

Implementation Notes:

  • Implement in-memory pagination
  • Validate query parameters

F-103: Get VM Details Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement GET /api/v1/vms/{vm_id} endpoint to retrieve specific VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Return VM details if found
  • Return 200 OK with VM object
  • Return 404 Not Found if VM doesn't exist
  • Validate UUID format

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_get_vm_success, test_get_vm_not_found

Implementation Notes:

  • Simple lookup by UUID
  • Clear error message for not found

F-104: Delete VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement DELETE /api/v1/vms/{vm_id} endpoint to delete VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Mark VM as DELETED
  • Return 204 No Content on success
  • Return 404 Not Found if VM doesn't exist
  • Allow deletion from any state

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_delete_vm_success, test_delete_vm_not_found

Implementation Notes:

  • Soft delete (mark as DELETED) vs hard delete
  • Operation is idempotent

API Endpoints - Lifecycle

F-201: Start VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/start to boot VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Transition STOPPED → RUNNING
  • Update updated_at timestamp
  • Return 200 OK with updated VM
  • Return 404 if VM not found
  • Return 409 Conflict if already running

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_start_vm_success, test_start_vm_already_running

Implementation Notes:

  • Validate state transition in service layer
  • Clear error messages for invalid transitions

F-202: Stop VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/stop to shutdown VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Transition RUNNING → STOPPED or PAUSED → STOPPED
  • Update updated_at timestamp
  • Return 200 OK with updated VM
  • Return 404 if VM not found
  • Return 409 Conflict if already stopped

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_stop_vm_success, test_stop_vm_already_stopped

Implementation Notes:

  • Allow stop from both RUNNING and PAUSED states

F-203: Restart VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/restart to reboot VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Only allow restart if RUNNING
  • Keep status as RUNNING (simulated reboot)
  • Update updated_at timestamp
  • Return 200 OK with updated VM
  • Return 404 if VM not found
  • Return 409 Conflict if not running

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_restart_vm_success, test_restart_stopped_vm_fails

Implementation Notes:

  • Restart only valid from RUNNING state

F-204: Pause VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/pause to suspend VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Transition RUNNING → PAUSED
  • Update updated_at timestamp
  • Return 200 OK with updated VM
  • Return 404 if VM not found
  • Return 409 Conflict if not running

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_pause_vm_success, test_pause_stopped_vm_fails

Implementation Notes:

  • Can only pause RUNNING VMs

F-205: Resume VM Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement POST /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/resume to resume paused VM.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Transition PAUSED → RUNNING
  • Update updated_at timestamp
  • Return 200 OK with updated VM
  • Return 404 if VM not found
  • Return 409 Conflict if not paused

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_resume_vm_success, test_resume_running_vm_fails

Implementation Notes:

  • Can only resume PAUSED VMs

F-206: Get VM Status Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Medium Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Implement GET /api/v1/vms/{vm_id}/status to get VM status.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Accept VM ID as path parameter
  • Return status, vm_id, updated_at
  • Return 200 OK with status object
  • Return 404 if VM not found

Dependencies: F-201 (Models), F-301 (Service), F-401 (Repository)

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_get_status_success, test_get_status_not_found

Implementation Notes:

  • Lightweight endpoint for status checks

F-207: Health Check Endpoint

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Medium Estimated Time: 3 minutes

Description: Implement GET /api/v1/health for API health monitoring.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Return health status, version, timestamp
  • Always return 200 OK
  • No authentication required
  • Used for monitoring/readiness checks

Dependencies: None

Test Results: ✅ Verified with test_health_check

Implementation Notes:

  • Simple endpoint with no business logic

Data Models

F-301: VM Data Models

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Create Pydantic models for VM operations.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create VMStatus enum (STOPPED, RUNNING, PAUSED, DELETED, ERROR)
  • Create VMFlavor enum (m1.tiny, m1.small, m1.medium, m1.large, m1.xlarge)
  • Create VMCreateRequest model
  • Create VMResponse model
  • Create VMListResponse model
  • Create VMStatusResponse model
  • Add proper validation rules

Dependencies: F-001

Test Results: ✅ 98% coverage, all validation working correctly

Implementation Notes:

  • Use Pydantic v2 features
  • Add field validators where needed
  • Include examples for documentation

Business Logic

F-401: VM Repository

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 15 minutes

Description: Implement repository layer for VM data access.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create VMRepository class
  • Implement in-memory storage (dict)
  • Implement CRUD operations
  • Generate UUIDs for new VMs
  • Generate random IP addresses
  • Thread-safe operations (if needed)

Dependencies: F-301

Test Results: ✅ 96% coverage, all CRUD operations working

Implementation Notes:

  • Mock OpenStack SDK integration
  • Simple dict-based storage for POC

F-402: VM Service

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Implement business logic layer for VM operations.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create VMService class
  • Implement all lifecycle operations
  • Validate state transitions
  • Throw appropriate exceptions
  • Update timestamps on changes
  • Depend on VMRepository

Dependencies: F-301, F-401

Test Results: ✅ 93% coverage, all state transitions validated, 26 unit tests passing

Implementation Notes:

  • Enforce state machine rules
  • Clear separation from API layer

F-403: Custom Exceptions

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Define custom exception classes for the application.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create VMNotFoundException
  • Create InvalidStateTransitionException
  • Create ValidationException
  • Map exceptions to HTTP status codes

Dependencies: None

Test Results: ✅ 93% coverage, all exception scenarios tested

Implementation Notes:

  • Inherit from appropriate base exceptions
  • Include clear error messages

F-404: Application Routes

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 20 minutes

Description: Implement FastAPI routes for all endpoints.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create APIRouter with /api/v1 prefix
  • Implement all 11 endpoints
  • Use dependency injection for service
  • Handle exceptions properly
  • Return correct HTTP status codes
  • Add endpoint descriptions for docs

Dependencies: F-301, F-402

Test Results: ✅ 75% coverage, all 11 endpoints functional, 27 integration tests passing

Implementation Notes:

  • Use FastAPI best practices
  • Add tags for API documentation

F-405: Main Application

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Update main.py to bootstrap the application.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Import and include router
  • Configure CORS if needed
  • Add exception handlers
  • Configure logging
  • Set up dependency injection
  • Use modern lifespan context manager (instead of deprecated on_event)

Dependencies: F-404

Implementation Notes:

  • Clean, minimal main.py
  • All logic in appropriate modules
  • Using @asynccontextmanager for lifespan events

Testing

F-501: Unit Tests - Service Layer

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 20 minutes

Description: Write unit tests for VM service business logic.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Test VM creation logic
  • Test all state transitions (valid and invalid)
  • Test error cases
  • Mock repository layer
  • Achieve >80% coverage (93% achieved for vm_service.py)

Dependencies: F-402

Implementation Notes:

  • Use pytest fixtures
  • Mock VMRepository
  • 26 unit tests created
  • Tests cover: creation, retrieval, lifecycle, deletion, status, complete workflows

Test Results: ✅ 26/26 tests passed

F-502: Integration Tests - API Endpoints

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 20 minutes

Description: Write integration tests for all API endpoints.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Test all 11 endpoints
  • Test success scenarios
  • Test error scenarios (404, 409, 422)
  • Test pagination and filtering
  • Test complete workflows
  • Use TestClient from FastAPI

Dependencies: F-404, F-405

Implementation Notes:

  • Use httpx TestClient
  • Test end-to-end workflows
  • 27 integration tests created
  • Tests cover: health check, CRUD operations, lifecycle management, error cases, complete workflows

Test Results: ✅ 27/27 tests passed

F-503: Test Configuration

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Medium Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: Set up test infrastructure and configuration.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create pytest.ini or pyproject.toml config
  • Set up test fixtures
  • Configure coverage reporting
  • Add test requirements

Dependencies: F-501, F-502

Implementation Notes:

  • Target >80% coverage exceeded - 89% achieved
  • Test infrastructure fully functional
  • Coverage HTML reports generated

Test Results:

  • ✅ 53/53 total tests passed
  • ✅ 89% code coverage (Target: >80%)
  • 427 statements, 45 missed, 382 covered

Documentation

F-601: PROJECT_PLAN.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Complete project planning document with roadmap and timebox breakdown.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Document project scope and objectives
  • Define all phases with time estimates
  • Include risk assessment
  • List success criteria
  • Define deliverables

Dependencies: None


F-602: ARCHITECTURE.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Document system architecture and design decisions.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Architecture diagram
  • Explain layered architecture
  • Document design decisions with rationale
  • Include state machine diagram
  • Technology stack justification

F-603: API_SPECIFICATION.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Complete API endpoint documentation.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Document all 11 endpoints
  • Include request/response examples
  • Document error codes
  • Include workflow examples
  • Reference OpenAPI docs

F-604: FEATURE_TRACKER.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Description: This document - feature implementation tracker.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • List all features with IDs
  • Track implementation status
  • Define acceptance criteria
  • Document dependencies

F-605: README.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Critical Estimated Time: 7 minutes

Description: Create comprehensive README with setup and usage instructions.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Project overview and purpose
  • Setup instructions (prerequisites, installation)
  • How to run the application
  • API usage examples
  • Testing instructions
  • Link to other documentation

Dependencies: All other features

Implementation Notes:

  • Clear, concise, beginner-friendly
  • Includes table of contents, troubleshooting, VM flavors reference

F-606: BACKLOG.md

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: Medium Estimated Time: 3 minutes

Description: Document future enhancements beyond the timebox.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • List production-readiness features
  • Document real OpenStack integration plan
  • Include database persistence
  • Authentication/authorization
  • CI/CD pipeline
  • Containerization

Dependencies: None

Implementation Notes:

  • Organized into 4 phases with effort estimates
  • Covers P0 (Critical), P1 (High), P2 (Medium), P3 (Low) priorities
  • Total estimated effort: 53-81 days

F-607: CI/CD - GitHub Actions Testing

Status: ✅ Completed Priority: High Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Description: Set up automated testing using GitHub Actions for continuous integration.

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Create .github/workflows/test.yml workflow file
  • Test against multiple Python versions (3.11, 3.12, 3.13)
  • Run pytest with coverage reporting
  • Upload coverage to Codecov
  • Run code formatting check (black)
  • Run type checking (mypy)
  • Run linting (flake8)
  • Generate test summary

Dependencies: F-501, F-502, F-503

Test Results: ✅ GitHub Actions workflow created and configured

Implementation Notes:

  • Matrix strategy for testing multiple Python versions
  • Caches pip dependencies for faster builds
  • Runs on push to main/develop branches and on pull requests
  • Includes code quality checks (black, mypy, flake8)
  • Codecov integration for coverage tracking
  • Test summary generation for GitHub UI
