Nina is a woman with a family concerned about privacy but confused and not sure where to start.

Key findings

  • The location or address bar is mainly for search
  • Tries to pay attention to the URL because it is describing what is going on with the web page and could possibly indicate privacy concerns
  • The URL tells here where she is, and is a good backup even though she’s not entirely clear on it’s convention that she is on the right site
  • The padlock icon indicates it’s a secure connection and nobody can get into her connection to it. Likewise HTTPS is important and looks for it but sure what it does.

Interview notes

  • She uses search a lot, for anything that doesn’t know or is curious about and does it daily
  • For specific things that would be targeted she doesn’t search and has subscriptions, for instance to YouTube and podcasts
  • Googles tons but still asks for links but if need some more answers then just starts researching and searching
  • Is concerned about internet use and safety when using the internet with kids
  • She searches both in the bar and on Google web page first and then goes from there
  • Mobile use depends on the day but trying to use desktop more
  • On mobile always uses the bar
  • Rarely types an address and uses search instead but sometimes does for Slovenian addresses
  • Tries to look at the URL and what is going on when goes on a webpage and is especially concerned with cookies and tracking and clicks through all the GDPR options. But, once read the content doesn’t think about any of it on the site afterwards
  • Security matters when trying to find a web page, but sometimes when sees a message like “this website is not secure” just agrees to it if really need to and if it’s a Slovenian site will even if it’s ordering something like organic products.
  • Often looks at the address to make sure she’s actually where she wants to be, especial with crypto sites so she isn’t sent somewhere she shouldn’t or doesn’t want to be
  • She bookmarks that she is concerned about so she has the right ones
  • No idea how the address works really but like to know. She ran into some issues with Amazon DE to US and has been thinking about it
  • Sends links to people but usually sharing in app with click to share, and doesn’t copy the link often
  • When getting links from someone just trusted and clicks it
  • Likes getting the image preview and not having to read the full URL and often that’s enough and comfortable with the link
  • Thinks something is changing with the address when clicking around and avoids suggested links everywhere as she has no idea how she would be rerouted with the addresses
  • Trust issue with how got somewhere and saying what it is, wondering what it is, but seems complex
  • Constantly thinking that being tracked and doesn’t like it
  • Noticed icon with padlock and hopes that means it’s a secure site, which she thinks means that they won’t share anything with 3rd parties. It’s sort of like a stamp of approval and secure and nobody can get in
  • Looks for HTTPS but not positive what it does. Is it more secure? Why are there slashes? When looking at the address, just gives up after a certain bit reading left to right
  • Trusts .org more
  • Knows what domains are because she bought some so pays attention more
