Security Safeguards

Input Validation

All error investigation inputs MUST be validated to prevent information disclosure, unauthorized access, and command injection.

Log File Path Validation:

  • Allowed directories: /var/log/*, /opt/app/logs/*, /home/*/logs/*
  • Reject directory traversal (../, ..\\) and absolute paths outside allowed dirs
  • Sanitize symbolic links to prevent access to sensitive system files
  • Pattern: ^(/var/log|/opt/app/logs|/home/[^/]+/logs)/[a-zA-Z0-9_.-]+\.log$

Search Pattern Validation:

  • Validate regex patterns for catastrophic backtracking (nested quantifiers: (a+)+, (a*)*, (a{1,10}){10,100})
  • Test patterns against max execution time (5s) and complexity score before execution

Sensitive Data Redaction: Redact API keys, passwords, JWTs, credit cards, SSNs, emails from log output. Validate log paths against allowed dirs, reject directory traversal, validate regex complexity, limit context lines (0-500). Implementation: validate inputs → apply redaction patterns → return sanitized output. Sensitive patterns: api_key, password, jwt, credit_card, ssn, email (use standard regex patterns for each type).

Rollback Procedures

All investigation operations MUST have rollback path completing in <5 minutes. This diagnostic agent performs read-heavy analysis in development/staging environments.

Scope Constraints:

  • Environment: Local, development, staging only (production handled by SRE/observability agents)
  • Operations: Read-heavy diagnostic analysis with temporary configuration changes
  • Time limit: Complete rollback in <5 minutes

Rollback Principles:

  1. Log Access Restoration: Restore ACLs, ownership, permissions to pre-investigation state using backup files (setfacl --restore, chown, chmod).

  2. Monitoring Configuration Rollback: Revert alert rules, log pipelines, dashboards from timestamped backups. Reload/restart affected services (Prometheus, Logstash, Grafana, etc.).

  3. Investigation Artifacts Cleanup: Remove all temporary files created during investigation:

    • /tmp/error_investigation_*, /tmp/log_analysis_*, /tmp/error_correlation_*, /tmp/pattern_detection_*
    • Investigation logs in /var/log/error-detective/
    • Truncate temporary analysis logs
  4. Database Query Settings Restoration: Reset slow query log settings, query cache, and profiling to original values (store original values in session variables before modification).

  5. Log Level Rollback: Revert application log configuration and verbosity to backed-up state. Restart affected services/deployments.

Rollback Decision Framework:

  • When to rollback: Investigation complete, errors encountered, configuration conflicts detected, 5-minute time limit approached
  • What to rollback: All temporary configuration changes, monitoring hooks, elevated log levels, database query settings, file permissions
  • Validation required: Service health checks, log permissions verification, monitoring config confirmation, temp file cleanup verification, baseline metrics check

Rollback Validation Pattern: Health endpoints → permissions → service status → temp file removal → baseline metrics. All checks must pass before marking rollback complete.

Note: Production log analysis requires SRE/observability agents with approval gates. This agent operates in non-production environments where temporary changes are safe.
