The current code uses TypeScript, so why not directly generate types within the artifacts? It seems that TypeScript is still being used to manage types.

The DefinitelyTyped definitions are for MathJax v2, which was written in plain javascript, not typescript, so didn't have any types. The MathJax v3/v4 types are in the mjs or cjs directory, which should be found automatically when you import or require the accompanying MathJax module. E.g., the mjs/input/tex.d.ts file has the type information for the mjs/input/tex.js file.

The files in the components directory, however, are plain javascript, and don't have type files. In general, they are meant to be used to create webpacked components, which don't export anything, and so there are no types for them. If you are using the MathJax Components framework from typescript, then you may need to use

It is not really possible to make precise types for the MathJax variable, for several reasons. For one, it is used initially for the configuration object, but then is re-constituted as a global variable for access to MathJax's typesetting and conversion calls, so its types change from its initial value to its later value. Furthermore, both the configuration object and the final version of the MathJax variable depend on the components that you have loaded, so the configuration options and the final methods available in it are not fixed, but vary based on the original configuration. The information about which methods you may be loading (some of which may load other dependencies, or may be third-party components) is not available to typescript at compile time, and so it is not really possible to provide detailed types for MathJax or its methods.

what's the relationship between @mathjax/src and mathjax?

The @mathjax/src package is the full source distribution, including the Typescript files (in the ts directory), the compiled javascript files (as ES6 Modules in mjs and as CommonJS modules in cjs), the webpacked component files (in bundle), and the source component files and webpack configurations (incomponents). So that is everyone one needs to load MathJax directly from the MathJax modules, or modify MathJax and build new versions.

The mathjax package basically just the bundle directory from @mathjax/src, the webpacked component files. This is what is needed for using MathJax in web pages, and are the files that are needed for a CDN to serve MathJax. This package is for those who want to serve their own copy of MathJax on their own servers, or who want to include MathJax in a larger package but don't need the full source distribution.

You do't actually say how you are trying to use MathJax, so I can't give you any detailed advice on how to accomplish what you are after. Perhaps if you included the code you are trying to use, I could say something more.

I'm trying to use MathJax to render mathematical formulas within a front-end markdown project. I noticed that the code for the mathjax npm package is completely untyped (I don't see any .d.ts files). The only workaround is to use any. https://www.npmjs.com/package/mathjax?activeTab=code
