Compatibility with Microsoft.ApplicationInsights v3

Version 3 of the Microsoft.ApplicationInsights packages were recently released, with many breaking changes. This project, specifically Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.Profiler.Core, depends on Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.AspNetCore >= 2.23.0. Will it continue to work with v3 or should it be adapted?

@Piedone Thanks for the ask.
Application Insights V3 is a shim of Otel. We currently don't have plan to support application insights v3. Instead, we offer https://github.com/Azure/azuremonitor-opentelemetry-profiler-net if you want to use otel.

That said, I am opening for push back at this point.

If I understand correctly, Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Profiler for .NET requires you to use OpenTelemetry directly. I.e., you need to use AddOpenTelemetry().UseAzureMonitor() as opped to AddApplicationInsightsTelemetry(). I don't see how this would work with the latter. If it doesn't, then that means that there's no profiler if you want to keep using Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.AspNetCore, and if you want to use the profiler, you're forced to completely ditch the ApplicationInsights APIs and migrate over to OpenTelemetry.

Do I understand this correctly?

Yes, Azure Monitor Open Telemetry Profiler requires uses Open Telemetry.
If you prefer application insights SDK, I suggest keep using 2.x.

I see. Then it seems to me that there's no point upgrading an AI-using app to use v3, but rather, migrate to OpenTelemetry altogether. I've created an issue for us to track it: Lombiq/Open-Source-Orchard-Core-Extensions#1246.
