v2025.8.0 breaks python 3.9

Latest version displays the following error even though 3.9 is EOL in October

The debugger in the python extension no longer supports python versions minor than 3.9.

Worse - the Latest version is FORCED Upon you with no means to roll back.

I am using REDHAT 8.10 (Oopta) - do not tell me to change. This is a corporate requirement. This comes with Python 3.6.8 - period. requiring a change to this will take 1 to 2 months while our "VM-TEAM" - validates this change request. Meanwhile, I sit and twiddle my thumbs. I don't care if it is EOL.. I do not get to make those decisions.

I am using VS-CODE - just 5 minutes ago. Debugging things.
Exit VSCODE and restart vscode - and try to debug again I get the above message

AND - VS CODE just pops up a message there is a NEW VERSION of the PYTHON DEBUGGER

This is wrong in several ways.

a) It downloaded it without me asking - that is ok, I would expect that.

b) BUT - it should not use or FORCE this update automatically - ie: FORCED UPDATE is not good.

c) There seems to be NOMEANS* to go back to the old one from 5 minutes ago

d) Please tell me it is easy to rollback and PIN the feature

You can roll back your version by going to the extension in the market, clicking on the down arrow by uninstall button, and selecting an older version.

The English is also confusing. I'm not just being picky, because I genuinely don't know whether it's trying to say "less than 3.9" which implies 3.9 is ok, or "less than or equal to 3.9" which implies 3.9 is not ok...

NOTE: Since python3.9 is the DEFAULT version of python installed on all MACs - and now this breaks
This means this update is a BREAKING Change for python on a Mac.

Ok so from what I can see the issues are the confusing message- I agree and will go and fix this. What it is trying to say is that the minimum supported version is 3.9 (so we just moved it to 3.9 as 3.8 is out of support). Hopefully this can help clarify.

Ill go and fix the message and after that are there any outstanding issues then?

since 3.9 will be eol october 2025 does that mean you will disable 3.9 in october… or do you just let it continue to work? until something breaks

not every one can live on the bleeding edge. some of us have legacy systems we cannot easily upgrade

Hi so we put in the min version restriction once a version reaches eol since we update all our dependencies at the same time and then their would be version mis-alignments. You can just pin the version of the extension that has support for your python version to continue to use the debugger extension which supports 3.9.
