Problem with Python interpreter selection

Before

I used to manage all my Python setup and projects with uv. When I needed to create a new Python project, I did it like so:
uv init → code <my-project> → Select Python Interpreter (bottom-right button in the UI) → Browse → .venv\Scripts\python.exe.

VSCode would then switch to my Python context and everything worked correctly.

Now

Same steps, but VSCode refuses to use the interpreter from the venv:
Unable to handle c:\Users\<my-path>\.venv\Scripts\python.exe (Source: Python Environments)

What I tried ?

• Uninstalled the Python Environments extension → same issue
• Re-installed it and tweaked multiple settings: python.defaultInterpreterPath, python.createEnvironment.trigger, etc. → same issue
• Used the global Python interpreter → same issue
• Installed pyenv (apparently used for Python version detection) → same issue
• Changed the Python version → same issue
• Tried the preview version of the extension → same issue

Steps to reproduce:

1. OS: Windows 11 Professionnel
2. VSCode: installed via scoop.sh — version 1.108.2 (extras 2026-01-26)
3. Python manager: uv by Astral — versions: cpython-3.13.1, cpython-3.14.2 (windows-x86_64)
4. Init a Python project with uv init, then open it in VSCode
5. Click Select Python Interpreter → Browse (or manually enter the path): .venv\Scripts\python.exe
   (also reproduced with the global install at C:\Users\[USERNAME]\.local\bin\python.exe)

I have the same issue:

• Project managed with uv, with python 3.10
• MacOS 15.7.3 (24G419)
• VS Code Version: 1.111.0 (Universal) Commit: ce099c1ed25d9eb3076c11e4a280f3eb52b4fbeb
  • attached to a Docker container

If I click "Select Python Interpreter" and browse to /path/to/venv/bin/python3, VS Code says:

Unable to handle /path/to/venv/bin/python3
Source: Python environments

If I quit and restart vs code and re-attach to the container, it spins for several minutes and fails with:

Default interpreter path '/path/to/venv/bin/python3' could not be resolved: Could not resolve interpreter path '/path/to/venv/bin/python3
Source: Python environments

I explicitly added the venv path to the workspace python-envs.workspaceSearchPaths settings and it shows up in the python extension sidebar under both 'global' and 'workspace'.

The status bar seems to show the correct interpreter when I'm visiting the settings.json tab, but as soon as I switch to a python file it reverts to Select Python Interpreter

Hello! Can you try the two of the following so I can help diagnose:

Run the Python Environment Tool and share the output? Here’s how:

1. Open VS Code
2. Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+P
3. Run: Python: Run Python Environment Tool (PET) in Terminal...
4. When prompted, choose “Search all”
5. Wait until it finishes and a terminal called “Python Environment Tool” appears at the bottom
6. Copy everything printed there and paste it here (or attach it as a text file)

This will show us which environments VS Code detected and how they were resolved, which is very helpful for debugging interpreter issues 👍

🐍 How to Get Logs from the Python Environments Output Channel

1. Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac).
2. Run the command: Developer: Set Log Level…
   • Select Trace.
3. Reproduce the issue.
4. Open the Output panel (you can do this via the Command Palette: View: Toggle Output).
5. In the Output panel dropdown, select Python.
6. Copy the relevant logs and paste them here along with any error messages.

I had the same problem. After doing some research myself, I found that there was no python-env-tools folder in my python extensions folder. I use Antigravity, so the default marketplace is open-vsx. Also I had VSCode installed, so I copied the entire python-env-tools folder to it and it seemed to fix the problem. But I don't know, it's probably just temporary.

same problem here, now this extension cannot set any interpreter, even i download another python manually and select python.exe from it. this extension not load any interpreter at all.

Thanks everyone for the reports! After analyzing the logs and discussion, I've identified two distinct problems being reported here:

• If you're using Open VSX marketplace: The Python extension on Open VSX is missing the python-env-tools binary
• If you're using official VS Code from Microsoft:

The logs show pyenv which python is taking a very long time (40+ seconds). If you have pyenv installed but haven't fully configured it, this can cause the Python extension to timeout.

Quick test: Open a terminal and run:

pyenv which python

If this hangs or takes a long time, that's the source of the issue. Otherwise I will investigate more on the PET side and see why it is hanging if it works successfully from terminal
