Do backups work across different devices?

This is my use case:
I would like to be able to transfer a created backup to a new device, in case I lose the old device or it stops working.
Is this software suitable for my use case? Or can I only restore the backup to the exact same device?

Yes, backups should generally work across devices, with one small caveat.
When you download an app from the Google Play Store, you usually get enough files to run it on your specific CPU architecture and device form factor. These days, this architecture is basically the same across devices (arm64-v8a).
Therefore, no problems should arise, as long as you're not e.g. backing up your PC running Android, and restoring that to your phone. Contact and storage backups aren't affected.
