To perform template matching you will need a template image that is searched in the target image.
The best is to simply crop a typical region of interest from a representative image.
Open the image containing the object searched
Draw a rectangular region of interest containing the object
Click Image>Crop (or Shift+X) to crop the current image, or Image>Duplicate (Shift+D) to create a new image containing the selected region. This is the template image !
If using the Template Matching Image plugin, the resulting template can be used as such. Otherwise save the resulting template image as a TIF.
