Selenium recently released versions 3 and 3.0.1... and around the same time, Firefox overhauled their webdriver, so since version 48, the current 2.53 Selenium no longer works with it. See this MDN page, this blog post, and the new webdriver for starting points if anyone wants to dig into this further.
This is still a work-in-progress as it doesn't work locally (but I was nevertheless interested to see how it would fail on TravisCI). This PR is based on #812 also, which improves the testing / CI scripts that this PR will be modifying.
